It's pretty clear among everybody except Nico Harrison that Luka Doncic's role with the Dallas Mavericks was one that fans will never forget. Doncic was on pace to break Dirk Nowitzki's records, and as much as Mavs fans might not want to admit, Doncic was already a more naturally talented player compared to Nowitzki. It seems as if he didn't want to give up the dream of being a Maverick just yet.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal (subscription required), they highlight Doncic's revenge tour and what more he has in store for his Los Angeles Lakers career. In all of the interviews that Doncic has given, he makes it almost clear that he wishes he had never left the Mavericks, and how he felt his time in Dallas was cut short abruptly without any true reasoning.
"I think it will always be strange,” Doncic said. “I don’t know if someday I will have closure or not. For sure, it will always be weird.”
It seems like Harrison's reasoning stems from Doncic's conditioning habits, but he has broken that curse in just a few short months with one of the most amazing transformations we've seen from Doncic. It seems his revenge tour is just another chapter in Doncic walking the walk, which Mavs fans have seen him do several times. Doncic not feeling closure might last a long time, but it makes Mavs fans think of what still could've been. Mavericks fans don't have closure, and neither does Doncic.
Luka Doncic may never find closure from Mavericks
Doncic was able to bring us some of the best scoring performances in NBA history, such as the 73-point game against the Atlanta Hawks, the team that originally drafted him back in 2018. With all the "Luka Magic" memories soaked in Mavs history forever, how can fans just walk away from that? Pretty much everything we've seen from Doncic still shows that he loves the Mavericks and only has to worry about putting up 40-burgers whenever he meets up against them.
Doncic shed tears during his tribute video from the Mavs on his first night back at American Airlines Center as a member of the Lakers, and it was obvious that Doncic really wanted to stay. Mavs fans were as shocked as any NBA fan that night, and wondered how Harrison could really trade away a once-in-a-lifetime generational superstar. Donning the purple and gold at the AAC really put into perspective how odd things looked.
Doncic has also been known to have fun and take jabs at Harrison and the Mavs. Doncic also got to take another subtle jab at Harrison during a New York Yankees broadcast when he was asked if he would send a copy of Men's Magazine to the Mavericks. "They probably saw it," Doncic said. "I don't have to worry about that."
Doncic has also looked comfortable in a Lakers uniform since the trade, and even posted a cryptic video on X with a mix of Lakers highlights using the song, "Stronger." Even though he got knocked out in the first round against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Doncic is going to come back stronger, but Mavs fans still wonder what could've been if they had the new and improved Slovenian superstar like the one in Men's Health Magazine.
