Mavericks foolishly ruined the present and future with Luka Doncic trade

Injuries have already haunted the Dallas Mavericks this season, but now, the biggest concern seems to be their franchise player being traded to another team and being blindsided. Dallas traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in a blockbuster deal centered around Anthony Davis.

Doncic has been complimented by many NBA legends, including LeBron James, his new teammate. This exceptional move is already known for many reasons as one of the worst trades in Dallas sports history.

This seems to be one of the most questionable trades in NBA history. A franchise player in their 20s is being let go for an injury-prone star in their 30s.

There was definitely a lot of criticism around Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson as to why they didn't keep a future MVP in Steve Nash, but this seems like another level of insanity.

Harrison's controversial move is unlike any other in Mavericks history

While general manager Nico Harrison has been known for some of the best trade deals in the past two years, this might've been his biggest mistake yet. While it looked like Maxi Kleber would end up becoming trade bait, Harrison was a part of trading away their franchise piece out of nowhere.

Doncic was possibly the one to surpass Dirk Nowitzki in All-Star appearances and NBA titles. Now that Doncic is a Los Angeles Laker, it seems like this is the last hope for LeBron James to win an NBA championship. James has expressed plenty of wishes to play again with Kyrie Irving throughout the years by completing his game, but instead, it'll be Doncic joining the Lakers, not an NBA champion who's already playing with Dallas.

This is a concerning move for Dallas considering they haven't had an answer for Doncic's injury since Christmas Day.

Doncic has been the Mavs' cash cow ever since his rookie debut in the 2018-19 NBA season. Doncic was the main character who led the Mavs to the NBA Finals in 2024, as he competed with Nikola Jokic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for the NBA MVP.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time we've seen the Mavericks be a part of a controversial trade like this in the mainstream media, as Nash was traded to the Phoenix Suns to eventually become an NBA MVP along with Nowitzki at the same time.

For Doncic, he made Dallas basketball relevant during Nowitzki's last season, as he looked like a kid who was looking to prove himself with his size, length, and shooting. It didn't take long for Doncic to make his mark and Dallas full-time. Doncic leaving the team wouldn't have been on anybody's radar.

As for Anthony Davis, he's become one of the greatest post players in Generation Z. For Mavs fans, they can only hope that he can continue his dominant scoring and tenacious shot blocking to make up for Doncic's offensive playmaking. Max Christie used to be one of the last players off the bench for the Lakers, but he's beginning to be a threat from downtown. If he can continue his streak of perimeter shooting, he will look to be a relevant player.

Either way, there's not much or anything at all where Mavs fans can justify the Davis-Doncic trade. It looks like the Lakers are going to have two true guards to run the offense, and the Mavericks are going to have Irving run the offense full time with Davis at the four position, which is what Davis wanted in the first place, but to know that Doncic became a decreasing attractive project moving forward says a lot about the Mavs organization going forward into their future.
