The Dallas Mavericks season is underway as the team began with Media Day on Monday. Players spoke about the arrival of new teammates and their mindset heading into the new year. One storyline was the growth and development of Dereck Lively II. The former rookie said he may start shooting more threes in games. This could be crucial for the team, as Lively II's progression played a huge role in their success last season.

The other storyline was the addition of Klay Thompson. The former Warrior brings plenty of experience and scoring to Dallas. Kyrie Irving spoke highly of his new teammate, as he believes Thompson could be the missing piece to another championship run. This is the team's mindset heading into training camp. Players like Luka Doncic believe it is championship or bust this coming season.

Many players are buying into Doncic's mindset, as they have been working all summer to enhance their performance. For example, Quentin Grimes has had no trouble perfecting his game. Grimes spent time at the Mavs facilities and in Houston working on his shot among many other things. He could easily enhance the team's 3-point shooting assuming he returns without any lingering injuries.

Klay Thompson is making a big impact as a leader

Thompson has been a major asset in helping Grimes perfect his shot. Grimes spoke about Klay's impact. He mentioned how he has been doing everything possible to learn from the former Splash Brother.

"I've been walking his ear off the whole time. I'm with him every day, shooting after practice. He's been a really good mentor," Grimes said.

Grimes went on to say that he is learning from one of the best. This is indeed true. Thompson is one of the best shooters. For his career, he has shot 41.3 percent from the 3-point line. Overall, he has converted 45.3 percent of his shots. Klay has converted the sixth most 3-pointers of all time. He ranks behind Reggie Miller, who is ahead of him with 79 more 3-pointers.

Thompson's guidance could be a tremendous asset to Grimes. For his career, Grimes has made 37.1 percent of his 3-point attempts. In his first two years in the league, he shot above 38 percent from long range. His numbers dipped last season, as he made 33.8 percent of his 3-pointers.

Grimes could transition to his old self, and Thompson is the perfect mentor to help him out. The new duo already spent time together in the summer when they were seen in Los Angeles. They and other players were jumping off a boat and swimming in the water.

Thompson's mentorship speaks volumes to the type of values he brings to the team. He has already shown he is more than a shooter. His guidance could be the perfect ingredient to a successful season.

Stay tuned, as the Dallas Mavericks take the court Monday in their first preseason game.
