Luka Doncic's one-word goal for this season will have Mavericks fans fired up
By Jake Ferraro
Since being a member of the Dallas Mavericks organization, Luka Doncic has taken the NBA by storm. After winning the 2019 Rookie of the Year, Doncic has made First Team All-NBA every year since 2020 (five times in a row).
Last season, Doncic had the best year of his career with winning his first scoring title, and led the Mavericks to the 2024 NBA Finals. It was the first time since 2011 the Mavericks reached the Finals, and it was the first time in the Doncic era.
However, Doncic faced criticism when he continued to whine to the officials, and it was so bad his teammates begged him to stop, but this season offers incredible excitement with Klay Thompson joining forces with Kyrie Irving and Doncic to create an impressive big three. With Dallas now having a big three, Doncic used one word to describe the goal for this season.
Luka Doncic says Mavericks' goal in one word is 'championship'
At Dallas Mavericks Media Day, Doncic was asked what the season goal is for the Mavericks. The catch was for Doncic to say the goal by using one word. Doncic responded by saying "championship."
By Doncic saying that, it adds more excitement for the entire Mavericks fanbase because Doncic is eager to lead the Mavericks back to the NBA Finals and win it. The Mavericks losing the 2024 NBA Finals to the Boston Celtics will forever be heartbreaking for the fans and team.
Entering this season, pressure is on the Mavericks to show that they weren't a one-year fluke who made the Finals as a fifth seed, but more pressure will be placed on Doncic. The Western Conference is loaded with superstars and competitive teams. If Doncic plays the way he did last season, the goal of winning a championship can happen. Doncic has more motivation after not winning the 2024 NBA MVP, but also not being the favorite to win MVP this season.
One thing that can help Dallas reach the Finals is the rest of the supporting cast after Dallas' big three. Dereck Lively II is poised to take a big step this season and be part of the future in Dallas. P.J. Washington adds good defense, Spencer Dinwiddie returning to Dallas brings in excitement and the team is familiar with his game, and Naji Marshall and Quentin Grimes are ready for fresh starts in Dallas.
Head coach Jason Kidd will have pressure on himself to help the Mavericks learn from their Finals loss, but the Mavericks have made the Western Conference Finals twice with Kidd as coach.
The energy at American Airlines Center from the Mavericks fans will be one of the highest it's ever been. With Doncic saying the goal is to win the championship in 2025, it will add more energy to the building. For more on the Mavericks, stay tuned.
