Mavericks' new 'big three' will lead them back to the promised land
By Jake Ferraro
When the Dallas Mavericks fell in the 2024 NBA Finals to the Boston Celtics, it was obvious to the team that the team was missing a third star and scorer. To add a star to join forces with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, the Mavericks completed a sign-and-trade for Golden State Warriors legend Klay Thompson.
Thompson joining Dallas brought tremendous energy and excitement throughout all of Dallas. With Dallas now having three stars on the court, it offers to be a matchup nightmare for opposing teams.
With Thompson joining Dallas, not only did Dallas get a big three, not only did they get better as a team, but they also established themselves again as title contenders, and Irving knows they are a title favorite with his comments at Dallas Mavericks Media Day.
Mavs' new 'big three' with Thompson will lead them back to the Finals
Anytime an NBA team has an impressive big three, it offers a better chance to win a title. The Miami Heat did it with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. The Cleveland Cavaliers did it with James, Irving, and Kevin Love. Now, the Mavericks are poised for greatness with their big three. Irving had high praise when talking about Thompson joining Dallas to create a "big three" that can force the Mavericks to be viewed at as title contenders.
"If you ask any of us, we feel like we got better as a team," Irving said. "We got better as a group that has leadership and also experience, especially on that championship stage."
With Irving saying that about Dallas' big three, the Mavericks see a championship in their future. Even though the Mavericks were crushed when they lost the 2024 NBA Finals to the Boston Celtics, Dallas was able to get over the hump in the Western Conference. Dallas was able to take down other title-contending teams in the Western Conference, and that was needed from the team.
Dallas did get better as a team by adding Thompson, and Thompson is able to provide leadership to the Mavericks that they needed where Irving talked about. Irving continued to say great things about Thompson joining Dallas and making a big three.
"Being here in Dallas gave him an outsider's view of just what it could be like for him," Irving said. "So, I'm excited that he decided to come here. I'm excited he decided to commit to us for the next few years, and I feel like our dreams could be possible because he's here now."
With Irving saying that, it's clear Dallas is perfect for Thompson. But, Thompson is also ready to win another championship with his championship pedigree already. What can also help Thompson being in Dallas is he shares a bond with Irving, and Irving spoke highly of Thompson at Media Day.
Dallas will be a team looking to be reckoned with again this season. With coming off a Finals loss, more fuel is added to the fire for the team and their fans. Thompson makes the Mavericks a more dangerous team and a contending team again.
