The Dallas Mavericks created an opening on their bench when they let Greg St. Jean go after the season. They are hoping to add an experienced coach that can get the team a bit more organized in games. The Mavs' top target was rumored to be Frank Vogel, but he accepted the Suns head coaching gig on Friday afternoon.

The Suns are primed to contend with Kevin Durant and Devin Booker on their roster. It was a fantastic opportunity for coach Vogel and gives him a chance to immediately compete for a championship. Vogel led the Lakers to the title in 2020 inside the bubble. Going to Phoenix leaves the Mavericks scrambling for an assistant.

Who could be in line for the Mavs gig? There is just one head coaching opening remaining and that is in Toronto. As soon as it fills, the remaining coaches left on the market will be searching for assistant roles. Here are some names that jump out as possible targets.

Who can Mavericks target to assist Jason Kidd after Frank Vogel heads to the Suns?

Marc Stein reported (subscription required) back in April that James Borrego and Jeff Hornacek were among the Mavericks' top targets for their open assistant role. Both are still on the market and likely getting heavy consideration for the gig.

Other names to watch would be Stephen Silas, Dave Joerger, Nate McMillan, Terry Stotts, and Mike D’Antoni. The decision could come down to who wants to take a job as an assistant, and who is interested in working under coach Kidd.

It was fantastic to see Frank Vogel land another gig as a head coach, but now Dallas has to find someone else to take over as their assistant. James Borrego should be the top target. The 45-year-old did an underrated job turning the Hornets around when he was their head coach, and Charlotte had one of the best offenses in the league during his final season. Dallas needs a bit of play-calling juice, and Borrego would certainly provide it.

The Dallas Mavericks are in no rush to make a decision. They would like to have someone in place before summer league begins in July, but that is not necessary. The Mavs must find the right fit, and they should take their time doing it.

Who will join Jason Kidd’s staff next season? It is unknown right now, but stay tuned to The Smoking Cuban for all the latest.
