The Dallas Mavericks had a disappointing season where they shockingly missed the playoffs after reaching the conference finals in 2022. Dallas did not even qualify for the Play-In Tournament, despite Luka Doncic putting up MVP-caliber numbers. Defense, rim protection, and rebounding woes haunted the team and forced them into the tenth-worst record in the NBA.
General manager Nico Harrison promised the team would evaluate everything after the season, and they are making changes. First, it was former Jazz GM Dennis Lindsey joining the front office. Now it is shaking up the coaching staff with second-year assistant Greg St. Jean set to exit. Callie Caplan reported that more changes could be ahead too.
It appears head coach Jason Kidd and general manager Nico Harrison are safe, but the team is committed to shaking things up around them. St. Jean is the third straight assistant that worked with Luka Doncic to depart after the season. How much will Dallas shake up their coaching staff?
Dallas Mavericks make a change on the bench but not the one fans want
Fans have been calling for Jason Kidd’s job, and he deserves plenty of blame for the disappointing season, but the Hall of Famer has a fantastic relationship with Luka Doncic. Dallas does not want to upset their star player, so J-Kidd is safe for now.
The Mavericks reportedly wants to add a veteran coach to Kidd’s staff, which could be his eventual replacement if the 50-year-old is fired in the middle of next season because the team is struggling. Fans have been clamoring for former Raptor head coach Nick Nurse, but Frank Vogel appears to be a more likely option. Vogel led the Lakers to the championship in 2020 with Kidd as his assistant, and he would be a fantastic addition in Dallas.
Will the Dallas Mavericks further change things? They have had new assistants every year, so it would not be surprising to see the team add a few new pieces. Greg St. Jean was promoted to the front of the bench after Igor Kokoskov’s exit, and the Mavericks should be looking for another strong offensive mind to replace St. Jean.
St. Jean had a role in Adam Sandler's movie Hustle that earned him plenty of attention. The former Mavs assistant will likely catch on with another team this summer if he wants to continue coaching.
The Dallas Mavericks are going to make changes all over the organization after their disappointing season. There will be plenty of roster turnover this summer as well, so stay tuned for all the latest at The Smoking Cuban.
