The Dallas Mavericks plan on shaking things up after missing the playoffs entirely this season. They have already added to their front office, and the franchise is searching for a fresh assistant coach. The Mavs would love to add someone with heading coaching experience, but it could take time to sort things out.

There is no shortage of quality coaches available, but there are still five head openings across the league. Those jobs will likely fill before experienced coaches are willing to take on a role as an assistant.

Frank Vogel is drawing plenty of buzz. He helped the Los Angeles Lakers win the championship inside the bubble in 2020, and he has nine years of heading coaching experience for three different franchises. Multiple teams are interested in his services, but rumors suggest Dallas has the inside track if Vogel decides to take on an assistant role.

Rumors: Dallas Mavericks favorites to land Frank Vogel if takes role as assistant coach

Marc Stein reported in his latest piece (subscription required) that the Celtics have interest in adding both Vogel and former Mavericks assistant Stephen Silas to their bench this offseason. Silas was the Rockets head coach before being late go at the end of the season.

He also notes that “Dallas is regarded as the favorite to land him in the event Vogel begins to consider assistant coaching positions for next season”. Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd was Vogel's assistant on their 2020 championship squad, and their close relationship gives Dallas the edge.

Frank Vogel has not been an assistant coach since 2011. He interviewed for the Bucks' head coaching gig but did not make the final three candidates. The Suns and 76ers will both likely have interest in Vogel, and the veteran could land either job. If he does not, the 49-year-old could join the Mavericks bench next season as Kidd’s lead assistant.

If he comes to Dallas, Frank Vogel will be preaching defense and putting players in positions to be successful. He has won 52.6 percent of his 820 games as an NBA head coach and led his team to the conference finals three times. Vogel knows how to win, and he will bring some much-needed Xs and Os to the Mavs coaching staff.

Where will Frank Vogel end up next season? Who replaces Greg St. Jean on the Dallas Mavericks bench? Fans should stay tuned for all the latest.
