The Dallas Mavericks had to make changes after a disappointing season. They missed the playoffs entirely just one year after reaching the conference and with Luka Doncic putting up MVP numbers. His supporting cast just was not good enough and things got worse after Dallas made a blockbuster trade for Kyrie Irving. The Mavs added former GM Dennis Lindsey to their front office, parted ways with an assistant coach, and are exploring roster upgrades.

Improving the personnel around Luka is key. Dallas has several needs and limited assets to acquire them. It won’t be easy, but the front office has to find a way to make it happen this summer or risk losing their superstar player.

Marc Stein dropped his latest notes (subscription required) from around the league on Sunday afternoon where he named the leading candidates for the Mavs open assistant coaching job. The team is forced on veterans with head coaching experience, and here is a look at the latest rumors.

Stein notes that former Hornets head coach James Borrego and former Suns and Knick head coach Jeff Hornacek are the team’s top targets.

Borrego was the Hornets' head coach for four years before being let go in 2022. He went 138-164, but the Hornets made two Play-In Tournament appearances and surprisingly had the eighth-best offense in the NBA in his final season.

Hornacek was a head coach from 2013 to 2018 where he went 161-216 and failed to make the playoffs. The 59-year-old spent 14 seasons as a player in the NBA and was an All-Star in 1992. He was the Rockets' assistant coach for the last three years.

Stein also notes the franchise has interest in Frank Vogel, but he is searching for another head coaching gig. Terry Stotts is another candidate, and the Celtics are hoping to add former Mavericks assistant Stephen Silas to their bench next season.

The Dallas Mavericks want more experience in the front office and on the coaching staff as they look to get back into contention next season. There are a number of former head coaches the Mavs could target. They must re-sign Kyrie Irving in free agency and upgrade their roster to make it a reality. Can the Mavs do it? Stay tuned to find out, and for all the latest rumors as transaction season heats up.
