Mavericks' rumored free agency target's bold request is risky for Dallas
The NBA offseason is in full swing, and the Dallas Mavericks who just finished an accomplished season, are rumored to be interested in various free agents and different trade targets. One rumor is that the Mavs are interested in drafting Bronny James, and this is only the start.
In the NBA Finals, we saw the weaknesses of the Mavericks come to light on the biggest stage. We can credit the Boston Celtics' star power and game plan for effectively impacting the Mavs.
As we see teams begin retaining their own players, free agency is set to start in July. The rumors are swirling around the Mavs like they always have since Nico Harrison began his tenure in Dallas.
Klay Thompson pursuing a three-year contract would be risky for Mavericks
The Mavericks have been rumored to have an interest in Klay Thompson, and they are even among the betting favorites to land him.
According to a report by Monte Poole of NBC Sports, Klay Thompson wants at least a three-year deal in free agency.
Thompson could be a great asset for many contending teams next year including the Mavs. Just like any professional player, security in a contract is one of the top priorities.
Unfortunately, signing an aging declining veteran to a lengthy deal isn't what the Mavericks want or need. Harrison and the front office have assembled a core of young athletic guys and should continue treading that way.
The shooting Klay could bring off the bench would be a huge weapon for any team, but at what price, and is it worth it? They would obviously have to acquire him through a sign and trade, and pursuing him would be risky for Dallas.
The Mavericks will continue to be rumored to be interested in many free agents, but it'll be interesting to see if the Mavs look toward Thompson's way or another. The addition of another shot maker is warranted, but Klay's ability on defense and availability on the court could be questioned by interested teams.
