The Dallas Mavericks' 15-man roster was officially filled when the team signed Spencer Dinwiddie to a one-year deal earlier this week, and there is plenty to be excited about if you're a Mavs fan.
With the Dinwiddie signing, the team is gaining a combo guard who is an excellent playmaker and good scorer. The Mavs needed someone to step up as a scorer outside of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving desperately during the 2024 NBA Finals, and that's something that Dinwiddie is more than capable of.
While all eyes are on the Mavs' move for Dinwiddie, another move is on the horizon. Dallas is expected to re-sign Markieff Morris, but there has been some speculation that the best move may be for him not to be on the roster next season.
Markieff Morris silences speculation that he'll become a coach
Several fans have been speculating that Morris is coming back next season but as a coach and not a player. Morris definitely saw the noise as he silenced the idea that he should become an assistant coach and not a player next season.
As seen above in a message sent to @Mavs_FFL on X, Morris does not have an interest in starting his coaching career just yet. He brought up the point that he and Klay Thompson are both 34 years old and said that he's "not that old."
This is a hilarious response from Morris, and it also shows that he is still locked in on continuing his playing career with the Mavs. Morris has already promised Mavs fans that he'd be back, and all signs are pointing to that being as a player, not a coach.
Although Morris does possess the leadership qualities to become a great coach one day, he still has something left in the tank to contribute as a player. Although Morris likely won't play much next season, he could be utilized at power forward if a player in front of him on the depth chart misses time due to injury.
It's clear that the Mavs want to bring Morris back due to his leadership, and that is a role that Morris seems to be okay with. All of Morris' teammates seem to love him, and everyone needs someone like him to bring positive vibes from the bench and be someone for the younger players to look up to.
Morris was key for the Mavericks last season, and it looks like it's a priority for the Mavericks to ensure that he returns this summer as he is still a free agent. Dallas would have to cut someone to make room for Morris, but keeping him around is a necessity.
For all the latest on Markieff Morris and the Dallas Mavericks all offseason long, stay tuned.
