Dallas Mavericks best lineup heading into 2022-2023 season: 5. Maximum floor spacing

Since Doncic broke out, the Mavs have tried to put shooting around him. The franchise quickly recognized that number 77 is one of the best playmakers in the NBA, so they want to maximize the space on the floor around him. Here is the five-man unit that does that best.

PG: Luka Doncic

SG: Tim Hardaway Jr.

SF: Reggie Bullock

PF: Dorian Finney-Smith

C: Christian Wood

Over the last two seasons combined, every player in this lineup that is flaking Luka shot over 37 percent from 3-point range. Finney-Smith is the top marksmen at 39.5 percent with Bullock and Wood both being north of 38.4 percent.

The Mavericks could legitimately play five out with this lineup. Wood gives Doncic a strong pick and roll partner to work with, and they would be nearly impossible to stop on the offensive end of the floor. The defense has to choose between sucking into the paint to defend Luka inside or staying home on shooters. Either choice will result in an open look for the Mavs.

Defense would be the worry for Dallas with this unit. Christian Wood needs to improve his D and prove he can be a walking double-double on a playoff team. This will be his first chance to play in the postseason, and how he performs could be the key to the Mavericks' success this season.
