2022 NBA Draft mock #5: Cleveland Cavaliers: AJ Griffin
Griffin is the son of former Dallas Mavericks player and current Toronto Raptors assistant coach Adrian Griffin. The teenager is a 6’6 wing with an NBA-ready body and strong bloodlines that is going to play his college basketball at Duke.
He profiles a strong shooter and scorer that can create his own shots. The 18-year-old will play alongside fellow projected top-five pick Paolo Banchero as the Blue Devils expect to be one of the best teams in the country.
Griffin’s perimeter defense and ability to switch will have NBA scouts excited about drafting him. The league is trending towards smaller more athletic players, which should help Griffin’s stock. He will be competing with Jaden Hardy, Peyton Walsh, Caleb Houstan, and Patrick Baldwin Jr. to be the top wing selected in this class.
The Cleveland Cavaliers agreed to a $100 million extension with Jarrett Allen, drafted Evan Mobley, and traded for Lauri Markkanen, so they should be set in the frontcourt. Darius Garland is their point guard of the present and future, which leaves them searching for a wing with this pick. AJ Griffin edges the other talented options, but he will need to have a stellar freshman season at Duke to maintain this position.
