NBA writer pushes Mavericks to make unthinkable blockbuster trade at worst time

This would be absolutely crazy.

February 1 was one of those days that Dallas Mavericks fans won't ever forget. Hearts were torn apart and alliances crumbled. Luka Doncic, who was the face of the Mavs in the middle of his seventh season, was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis. Fans demanded that Nico Harrison be fired for making this move, and they might revolt to a whole new level if another illogical blockbuster trade is done this season.

Jasmyn Wimbish, an NBA writer for CBS Sports, recently posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, about the fact that the Mavs could make value with a trade involving Davis if he goes on a tear to start the season. Not only is this extreme, but the Mavs would be throwing away the experiment of Harrison's philosophy in the first place, before even giving it a chance. Sure, Mavs fans were upset at Harrison for trading Doncic, but not even giving Davis a chance to complete half the season would be diabolical and make the Doncic trade look even worse.

The Doncic trade was unfair to guys like Naji Marshall and Klay Thompson, who didn't even get a fair chance to play a full season with the Slovenian superstar. Fans would go crazy if the guy they got from Doncic in arguably the worst trade in history ends up getting traded this season.

Trading Davis in this season would complicate Mavs' future even more

Getting rid of Davis wouldn't really make sense at all. The Mavs would be giving up what they took a giant leap for, in hopes of winning a championship. Dallas has one of the biggest lineups out there, especially when Flagg is at point guard. Davis is the perfect guy to execute Harrison's defensive philosophy.

If the Mavs don't even try to play Davis for a full season, Harrison's ginormous move would've been pointless. Mavs fans will never like the Doncic trade, but they expect the front office to execute on this plan. Trading Davis wouldn't do any good for this organization.

If Jason Kidd's master plan to insert Cooper Flagg as a point guard ends up paying off, Davis and Flagg may actually become one of the best guard-center duos in the NBA. Flagg has not disappointed one bit at point guard, and Kidd has an easy transition to make with D'Angelo Russell and Flagg rotating at the one while Kyrie Irving is injured.

It wouldn't be fair for Flagg not to get the chance to get reps with Davis for a single season, and it brings up the question of who the Mavs would even get to replace him. Fans want to see Davis get through a full season without any injury issues. It only took three quarters for Davis to go down with an adductor strain in his Mavs debut, and fans want to see him at full strength consistently.

This is a team that has a lot of work to do, but also a lot of potential, and we wouldn't be talking about that without the 10-time All-Star in Davis. He's going to be the leader of this team while Flagg gets more NBA reps and Kyrie Irving gets better. Trading Davis would be diabolical, and we have to start normalizing teams staying together instead of playing the recency bias game.
