The Dallas Mavericks' season finally begins tonight, and even though the roster is basically set, there is still a player who doesn't belong on this team anymore: Caleb Martin.
Although Martin can still provide value to a team in the NBA, the Mavericks are just not a team that needs him right now. Martin was acquired by the Mavs during the unfortunate Nico Harrison era, trading away Quentin Grimes to bring him in, and it's time for the new front office to find a way out of that failed project.
The Mavericks already have too many forwards
As the season approaches, one of the biggest imbalances on the Mavs' roster that has been criticized by many fans and media members is that they have too many forwards and not enough ball handling. Trading away Grimes for Martin gave up one of the better guards the team had. Ever since, Dallas has had a huge lack of playmaking and shot creation.
This offseason didn't help the case for balancing the roster. The Mavericks have an abundance of forwards, some of which, honestly, probably won't see the court much. In addition to acquiring forwards like Santi Aldama, Zaccharie Risacher, and even Morez Johnson Jr. and Tobi Lawal in the draft, the Mavs still have wings like P.J. Washington, Max Christie, and obviously Cooper Flagg.
Things would be different if Martin were playing well enough to deserve minutes over these other players, but after going 0-for-5 and turning the ball over multiple times in their preseason game against the New Orleans Pelicans, Martin doesn't have a great argument for playing time either.
Dusty May doesn't have room to give minutes to the former Miami Heat forward, who, after his iconic Eastern Conference Finals series against the Boston Celtics in 2023, hasn't shown any resemblance to that player.
Caleb Martin can't stay healthy
Another reason that the Mavericks should move on from Martin as soon as possible is that he often isn't available. Even when he was initially traded for, Martin was going through hip strain and took weeks to make his debut with the team. Now, he's already injured again with a thumb sprain that's keeping him out of today's season opener against the Houston Rockets.
Martin has already missed a total of 48 games in just the past season and a half since being acquired by Dallas. Given how important staying healthy in this league is, and also given the awful injury history that has plagued the Mavericks over the last two seasons, this team needs to prioritize keeping players who are reliable to stay on the floor. And unfortunately, at this point in his career, Caleb Martin doesn't have that luxury.
Martin doesn't fit Dallas' timeline
The last big reason that Martin shouldn't be on the Mavs anymore is that his age just simply doesn't line up with Dallas' timeline. People would point to other players like Daniel Gafford and Kyrie Irving when arguing against that point. But Caleb Martin isn't producing like Gafford, and nowhere near as much as Irving will.
Players who are older on young teams are there for a reason, whether that's exceptional on-court production or veteran leadership. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like Martin, who has averaged only 3.9 points per game with the Mavs, provides either of those things and is more of a roster clogger than a benefit. Moving on from Martin would help allow younger players, even two-way guys, like the rumored Walter Clayton Jr. and Jett Howard, to flourish.
While Caleb Martin can still make an impact for a team that needs a forward and definitely still has value in this league, his fit with the Mavericks just isn't there. Harrison included Martin in his questionable vision, and now that Harrison is gone, it's time for the Mavericks to let go of his trade acquisition as well.
