Caleb Martin must be playable to prevent a Mavericks contract disaster

Ever since the Dallas Mavericks traded Quentin Grimes for Caleb Martin in 2025, it has seemed like a questionable move. Dallas gave up one of their best young pieces for a player who was four and a half years older than him, with far less potential. Many Mavs fans were furious with this decision by Nico Harrison when it happened, and it has only looked worse over time.

Caleb Martin's time in Dallas has been a rollercoaster

Grimes proceeded to thrive for the Philadelphia 76ers over the last season and a half and signed with the Los Angeles Lakers earlier this summer to reunite with Luka Doncic. Martin's journey with the Mavericks has looked far different, as he played just 14 games for them during the 2024-25 season and 58 games last season.

He began to look better as the season progressed and his 3-point touch returned, and his defense has always been strong, but he has also looked unplayable at times since arriving in Dallas just days after the Doncic trade went down in 2025. His injuries, varying confidence, and streaky jump shot have all played a role in this, and he must look playable to avoid putting the Mavs in a massive hole of being stuck with a player on a lucrative contract who doesn't play.

The Mavericks need Martin to be playable

If Martin is out of Dallas' rotation, Dallas could fall into the trap of having one of the worst contracts in the NBA on their books. Martin is under contract through the end of the 2027-28 season and will make over $19 million combined over the next two seasons. This is an extremely steep figure for a player who may not even be in their rotation, and Dallas has to find a way to drive his trade value up if they don't want to be stuck with him for two more seasons.

Negative contracts are one of the most crippling parts about roster building in today's NBA, and the Mavericks can't let their situation with Martin get any worse. They've obviously already lost the Martin-Grimes swap, given how differently their career trajectories have gone since the trade, but they can't let this turn into an all-out disaster.

Having a player on the end of your bench earn eight figures annually is not a great spot to be in, especially if the Mavs want to move him later on, and he has to be someone that Dusty May can rely on if Dallas is looking to trade him.

Teams won't bet on the Eastern Conference Finals film from Martin's time with the Miami Heat over three years ago when making a deal for him. They'll need to see recent production if they want to take a swing on him, and in order for Martin to do this, he needs to earn a role in the rotation.

Dallas has even more competition on the wing

Dallas' roster is completely revamped, and it'll be even harder for him to play compared to last year. Martin's defense could be his saving grace, as the Mavericks still need more defense at the point of attack, but he's going to have to beat out players like Max Christie, Zaccharie Risacher, Tarik Biberovic, Naji Marshall, and John Poulakidas if he wants a role under May.

The Mavs look completely different from the last time Martin took the floor, and he's going to have to earn his minutes.

Martin earning rotation minutes would be extremely beneficial when it comes to his contract situation, as they could shop him at the deadline and potentially ship him to a team looking for a 3-and-D wing. This could potentially help the Mavs gain future financial flexibility if they land an expiring contract for him, while also opening up more minutes for the young guys.

Dallas is in a difficult position with Martin as he enters his eighth season, but things will become much easier if he's playable. If not, the Mavericks may be stuck with him.
