Since the firing of Nico Harrison, Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi have been in charge of constructing the Dallas Mavericks' roster, and while fans haven't minded that, they will be caught by surprise when they hear who may be the next man up in the running. Jason Kidd has been the head coach of the Mavs since 2021, taking over for Rick Carlisle after a long stint, and he is now being linked to becoming the next GM of the Mavericks.
Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated went on "Run It Back" on FanDuel TV to say there's reason to believe the Mavs shouldn't count out Kidd as their next GM. That's only because fans' dream selections, Oklahoma City Thunder GM Sam Presti and Boston Celtics GM Brad Stevens, are likely going to stay with their respective organizations.
"I wouldn't dismiss Jason Kidd... he's very interested in that job," Mannix said.
Jason Kidd becoming the Mavericks' GM isn't out of the picture
There are too many reasons why this is not ideal for the Mavs' future. Because Kidd was in on the Doncic trade (according to Mark Cuban), the fanbase already doesn't trust him leading the Mavericks on the sideline, much less in the front office. Whenever fans see a reason not to let you off the hook for the Doncic trade, it doesn't end well.
It's not to say he wouldn't be good at his job, but the fanbase is already concerned about the team's leadership. Hiring someone from outside would be the best choice possible for Dallas. Someone on the inside may not be trusted since the Doncic trade, and honestly, it makes sense. It's a stain that needs to be wiped away forever.
Trading Anthony Davis was the first part of it, but if cleaning house completely is necessary to get rid of any bad apples from the trade, it's not the worst idea in the world.
How Dallas can ensure the best GM is hired
As fans have said since the Doncic trade went through, they have put some of the blame on Mark Cuban. Of course, Cuban was all for keeping Doncic, but he should've never given up control of the team. Cuban's excuse was that the job was too much to continue, and he decided to give the keys to Patrick Dumont.
Cuban needs to be back making basketball decisions as the full-time owner again. The best GM would be hired, and it probably wouldn't be Kidd. It'd be tough to come by, though. Cuban has stated that he doesn't regret selling the team but rather who he sold it to.
There's already plenty of tension within the Mavs organization since the Doncic trade, and this just stirred the pot even more. Cuban called out Kidd for being a part of the trade, and fans haven't been able to forget about it.
Cuban has to be involved in the decision to find their next GM. Riccardi and Finley aren't bad options, considering they continue to be involved. But Kidd becoming the next GM would stir up a frenzy, but Cuban can be involved to ensure someone else is hired.
