With preseason just two days away for the Dallas Mavericks, fans are speculating what the starting lineup will be for the revamped team. While Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg are locks to start, the other positions, especially the two-guard spot, are still uncertain. Max Christie started for most of the year last season, but the Mavericks' confidence in their trade acquisition, Zaccharie Risacher, makes it clear that he should get the starting nod.

The Mavericks are prioritizing Zaccharie Risacher

On Media Day, the former No. 1 overall pick shared what happened when he was traded to the Mavericks, and what he said clearly shows that the Mavericks are prioritizing Risacher going forward. The 6-foot-8 wing, speaking about himself, explained that the Mavericks "want me to be here." After trading Ryan Nembhard for him and clearly shifting towards a youth movement, Dallas seems to want Risacher to be a long-term piece for the future.

This confidence and prioritization of Risacher make his case clear to be part of the starting lineup for the 2026-2027 NBA season. The Mavericks making him a starter would prove their confidence in him and trust him to make an immediate impact on this team. While there are others who will be considered for the starting slot, namely Max Christie, making Risacher the starter seems like the better move if they want their long-term plan with him to work out.

Another big reason Dallas has confidence in the former Atlanta Hawk is that he was not brought in to be the face of the franchise. He doesn't have the weight of being a number one overall pick anymore. His role is to simply make a consistent impact on this team. That should bring his confidence back to have a career-defining season.

Risacher would give Dallas more versatility in the starting lineup

While the confidence the Mavericks have in the Frenchman is a big reason in his case to start, another one involves his actual on-the-court fit with the team. Risacher is a lengthy wing who can defend multiple positions, shoot threes at a good rate, and, as we've seen recently in training camp, can get out in transition to make plays.

With new coach Dusty May prioritizing a fast-paced offense, Risacher's ability to run would make him a perfect complement to playmakers like Irving and Flagg. And defensively, after Christie had a somewhat underwhelming season on that end of the floor, they would be wise to go with someone with more size and length to help cover more ground and make up for the fact that they are already starting a small guard in Irving.

Risacher could definitely be the Mavericks' X-factor this season. While many changes were made in this offseason, trading for a player who was the first overall pick just two years ago is the swing that most people will be looking at. Irving's return and Flagg's year-two leap will be the main events, but Risacher fitting well with this team could take them to the next level and hopefully into the playoffs.
