Jason Kidd’s Mavericks tenure may have been more dysfunctional than it appeared

“Great firing.” “Insufferable.” Two explosive quotes have emerged in the wake of Jason Kidd’s sudden Dallas Mavericks exit.

Jason Kidd’s tenure with the Dallas Mavericks may have been more toxic than many realized. Despite having four years remaining on his contract, Kidd and the Mavericks abruptly parted ways just two weeks after Patrick Dumont hired Masai Ujiri as the franchise’s next president. Though both sides publicly framed the split as mutual, sentiment in the aftermath has suggested there was far more dysfunction behind the scenes than initially believed.

Former players and insiders fuel Jason Kidd toxic reputation claims

In the aftermath of Kidd’s exit, several journalists (and even one of his former players) publicly shared their feelings about the Mavericks’ decision. Former journalist and current author Henry Abbott described Dallas’ move as a “great firing” while offering insight into his personal relationship with Kidd, noting that he had “been to his house, met his kids, then-wife…” Given Abbott’s longstanding connection to Kidd, his comments carry notable weight.

Moreover, former NBA Rookie of the Year Michael Carter-Williams (who played under Kidd for parts of two seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks) responded to a post describing the former Mavericks coach as “insufferable,” writing, “I’ve been trying to tell people this for 10 years now… truth always prevails.”

The original post also claimed that a Nike executive once said Kidd would eventually be fired from every coaching job he held, but not because of his basketball knowledge, but because his personality would ultimately “start to weigh on people.” These accounts may appear isolated… but, taken together, they have contributed to a broader reassessment of Kidd’s tenure in Dallas.

The broader sentiment surrounding Kidd has taken a noticeable turn, shifting from professional critique to more personal character assessments.

While it has long been noted that Kidd can be gruff and combative, particularly with the media, recent insider accounts have added new context to those perceptions and cast fresh light on his tenure in Dallas. Taken together, the accounts have fueled questions about whether the same dynamics that surfaced elsewhere in his career were also present in Dallas.

But Kidd’s tenure in Dallas goes beyond questions about his demeanor with those outside the organization. Long regarded as a players’ coach and an advocate within the locker room, he has also reportedly sought greater influence in the team’s front office structure — an aspiration that went unfulfilled.

Luka Doncic trade fallout and Kidd’s role controversy resurfaces

At the same time, his name has surfaced in discussions around major organizational decisions, including the franchise-altering Luka Doncic trade, which he had publicly distanced himself from.

Despite Kidd’s attempts to move past questions surrounding the ill-fated Doncic trade, speculation continued to resurface. In early April, former majority owner Mark Cuban suggested Kidd was involved in the deal, prompting a firm response from the head coach. “As I have said, I was not part of the process,” Kidd stated. The comment followed an earlier, more forceful reaction in which he insisted, “We have to move on.”

Although Kidd attempted to distance himself from questions surrounding the Doncic trade, the speculation continued to resurface. A day after news of Kidd’s departure broke, Mavericks president Ujiri stated that he wanted to begin with a “new slate.” His comments came in the wake of NBA insider Shams Charania reiterating reporting that Kidd had supported Dallas’ decision to trade Doncic.

The perceived toxicity surrounding both Kidd’s role within the organization and his handling of the trade has not gone unnoticed. Fans have criticized his combative responses to questions about the deal, with some expressing frustration that he has denied involvement rather than addressing the situation more directly.

Kidd’s front office ambitions and power struggles in Dallas

Nonetheless, this instance serves as another example that sheds light on Kidd’s ambitions within the organization. He had reportedly pursued a role as team president, a desire that mirrored ambitions he held years earlier in Milwaukee. On both occasions, however, he was ultimately denied such authority. In Dallas, that pursuit of greater control could be viewed as potentially clashing with the organization’s evolving power structure following Ujiri’s arrival.

All in all, while little was publicly revealed during Kidd’s tenure as Mavericks head coach, more has emerged in the aftermath of his departure that has shed light on the internal tensions that may have existed behind the scenes.

In that context, Ujiri’s decision to reset the organization appears aimed at drawing a clear line under lingering questions surrounding Kidd’s role in the Doncic trade and the broader direction of the franchise, as well as preventing further instability tied to internal dynamics that had begun to define the team’s recent past.
