The seemingly never-ending Giannis Antetokounmpo trade saga ended late on Monday night after he was traded to the Miami Heat for a return centered around Tyler Herro, multiple young assets, and future draft capital. The Dallas Mavericks obviously weren't in the hunt for the two-time MVP, as they're building for the future around Cooper Flagg, but one rumor surrounding Antetokounmpo should make MFFLs extremely thankful that he was traded to an Eastern Conference team.

Giannis Antetokounmpo was open to a trade to Minnesota

According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, Antetokounmpo was open to signing an extension with the Minnesota Timberwolves had he been traded there. The Timberwolves were the only West team he was willing to sign a contract extension with, joining the Heat and Boston Celtics. There had been some buzz about Minnesota potentially being in the hunt for him earlier in the offseason, and this report from Haynes shows that there was legitimate interest from Giannis' camp to head west.

The Greek Freak was at least open to a trade from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Western Conference if he ended up in Minnesota, despite earlier reporting that he only wanted to stay in the East, and Dallas dodged a disaster here. The West is already an uphill battle, and the Mavs should accept every win that they can get.

Why Giannis joining Minnesota would've been a nightmare for Dallas

If Antetokounmpo had been traded to the Western Conference, the Mavericks' path to contention would've been much harder than before. Dallas is trying to build a title contender around Flagg, and one of the most dominant players of the era joining their conference would've changed things significantly.

They already have their hands full with Victor Wembanyama in San Antonio, Luka Doncic in Los Angeles, Nikola Jokic in Denver, and Anthony Edwards in Minnesota. Adding another top player in the NBA to the mix would've turned this cage fight that is the Western Conference into an all-out war that Dallas would've had an extremely hard time winning.

The Timberwolves are already one of the best teams in the West.

They've made the Western Conference Finals twice in the last three years, have Anthony Edwards, one of the best players in the league, as their superstar, and are led by an elite coach in Chris Finch. Minny also has elite role players who are proven playoff performers, including Ayo Dosunmu, and adding Antetokounmpo to this squad would've made them even more of a juggernaut.

Ant-Man and Giannis would've formed a dangerous duo, as both players love to defend, are ultimate competitors, and can control the game offensively. They would've been top-notch contenders for every season moving forward, and this would've complicated things for the Mavericks.

Dallas would've had another behemoth to get through in order to reach the NBA Finals for the fourth time in franchise history, and Antetokounmpo staying in the East saves them from a major headache. Giannis is one of the hardest players to game plan for in the entire NBA, and the West doesn't need any more top-end talent as Masai Ujiri, Mike Schmitz, and Dusty May try to help Dallas return to the NBA Playoffs for the first time since 2024.
