According to a report from NBA insider Marc Stein on Memorial Day, Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo prefers to remain in the Eastern Conference (subscription required) rather than push for a trade to the West this summer.
This is great news for the Dallas Mavericks, as one of the most dominant players of the 21st century likely isn't coming to their conference this offseason. This gives Cooper Flagg and the Mavs one fewer superstar to go through as they push to return to the NBA Playoffs for the first time since 2024.
"Giannis, for his part, appears to be largely East-minded when it comes to desired landing spots and the 31-year-old is certainly expected to wield considerable wherewithal to influence the final outcome with only one fully guaranteed season left on his contract," Stein reported.
Giannis Antetokounmpo looks destined to stay in the East
Antetokounmpo trade rumors have been swirling for some time now, and with the Bucks being open to trading him, it has never seemed more likely that the two-time MVP is moved. His situation in Milwaukee got extremely rocky this season, and it looks like it's reached a point of no return.
The Bucks could still look to make a blockbuster trade to convince Antetokounmpo to remain in Milwaukee, but the fact of the matter is that he's ready to move on. This was reported before the trade deadline last season, and it seems like nothing has changed on that front.
He wants to remain in the East, and Dallas will emerge as real winners if his wish is granted to remain in the Eastern Conference.
Imagine how much things would change for the Mavericks if Antetokounmpo demanded to be dealt to a team that's already a playoff team in the West this summer. Dallas already has to go through players like Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luka Doncic, and Victor Wembanyama (four of the five members of the All-NBA First Team) to reach the NBA Finals again. Adding the Greek Freak to the mix would make contention even more difficult.
The Bucks and Antetokounmpo will work together to find a deal that works for both sides, and with his history playing in Milwaukee, it seems like they will do their best to find a trade destination that he'll be pleased with. This will all depend on who plans to show interest in the 10-time All-Star, but Dallas is in a good spot here.
They obviously don't make sense as a Giannis suitor, but keeping him as far away as possible from the West will always be good for the Mavericks.
The West is already hard enough for Dallas
He is one of the scariest players to go up against in the NBA, and with the Western Conference already being a gauntlet, Dallas needs all the help they can get. The San Antonio Spurs-Oklahoma City Thunder Western Conference Finals show how much the Mavericks need to improve before becoming real contenders, and a potential Giannis trade to the West would only make things harder.
Him joining a Western Conference playoff team would completely change the balance of power in the league, and every game that he plays out East is a win for Dallas. Giannis being moved to a team like the Spurs, Thunder, Los Angeles Lakers, or even the Minnesota Timberwolves would change the West from a brutal conference into a full-blown gladiator coliseum. Every playoff series would feel impossible to survive for a young team.
The Mavericks still have a ways to go before becoming contenders again, but a potential Antetokounmpo would truly change everything for the NBA. The West is already stacked enough, and making the conference even more competitive would increase the odds even more for a rebuilding team like the Mavs.
