The Dallas Mavericks played their first game without Luka Doncic on Tuesday. The team suffered a crucial two-point defeat to the Philadelphia 76ers, and they have now lost three games in a row. Kyrie Irving scored a near-double-double with 34 points and nine rebounds.
However, even after playing a solid game, Irving couldn't help but think of his former teammate. Irving explained that the Luka Doncic trade "really shocked" him. He stated that "it's still a grieving process," and that he missed his "hermano." Irving's message hit home, as many Mavs fans grew to love the connection between the two former teammates.
The trade may take time to recover from. Fans continue expressing disgust and outrage against the team, believing Doncic would be a Mav for life. Doncic too was shocked by the trade. It's reported that he cried when he heard about that trade and felt upset towards the team. Doncic's anger may never go away and could spark fire the next time he plays against the Mavs.
Doncic has every right to be upset. He was the team's leading offensive scorer and main attraction over the past seven seasons. He played a major role in helping the Mavericks advance to their first NBA Finals since 2011 last season.
Green believes Doncic trade will reshape Mavs' offense
Yet, some people believe Doncic's offensive success wasn't enough, and the trade was much needed. Former Los Angeles Lakers champion Danny Green jumped on the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show to discuss his opinion of the mega trade. He did not hold back about Nico Harrison's gamble and the Mavs' former offense under Luka Doncic.
If you start the video at the 3-minute mark, Green elaborates on Harrison's ability to make the trade. Green explained that the trade, "is a ballsy move by Nico." He detailed how it was "good for him for making it." Green also outlined that the trade could allow other general managers to creep out of their shadow and make risky moves.
Green outlined the reason Harrison made such a gutsy move. He believed that the Mavs needed to make the trade if they hoped to change their offensive approach. Green compared Doncic's style to James Harden. Green stated, "James is very good too, but he hasn't shown that style of play has been able to win you a championship successfully." He elaborated on how that type of offensive formula doesn't win when it matters.
Along with offensive schemes, Green thinks that Harrison and the Mavericks are looking to the present. He thought that maybe the Mavs questioned their team's mentality. "We need to re-route this and try and get as much as we can for it in return and win now."
Some of Green's statements are nothing new. During the team's press conference this week, Harrison stated the team's future was three to four years from now. Yet, Harrison had no clear answer when describing the team's long-term plan.
However, whatever the reasoning is, trading Doncic to the Lakers is just wild. The team had a generational talent, who could score at a high level every single night. Doncic carried the team to new heights and brought magic every time he touched the court. His offensive flair is the reason the Mavs were relevant once Dirk Nowitzki retired.
So, whatever anyone's opinion is, trading Doncic doesn't make sense to begin with. It's probable over the next few days and weeks more opinions and rumors will come out about the trade. Either way, the Mavs will need to find someone to replicate Doncic's production if they hope to start winning now.
