Fans of the Dallas Mavericks are still going through a living nightmare with their superstar now playing for the Los Angeles Lakers after Saturday night's trade that sent Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris to Los Angeles for Anthony Davis and Max Christie.
After going from a teenage sensation to raising his family in North Texas, Mavs fans expected Doncic to be in Dallas for his entire career. Doncic brought Dallas a security blanket where the organization seemed to be in good hands.
That was not the case for Nico Harrison, who was the main catalyst to make perhaps the most controversial trade in NBA history. Harrison held a press conference prior to Dallas' game against the Cleveland Cavaliers just hours after the trade became official. The vibes in the press conference were odd, to say the least, but Harrison provided one of the all-time infamous quotes that Mavs fans might never forgive him for.
Harrison's Doncic trade ignored the Mavericks' long-term future
When the Mavs got Davis for Doncic, fans immediately made the comparison that Doncic is six years younger than Davis. Davis is also known to be injury-prone for much of his career, outside of the last few years. Harrison made a comment that made it apparent that it's all of a sudden championship or bust for the Mavericks starting now.
"The future to me is three to four years from now," Harrison said. "The future 10 years from now, I don't know. They’ll probably bury me and [Kidd] by then. Or we’ll bury ourselves."
Adding on to the awkward laughing and smiling from Harrison, this was one of the more bizarre moments in the entire press conference. Harrison basically admitted that the bigger picture 10 years from now is unknown, which feels like an absolute blunder from a GM who arguably made the biggest trade that will alter NBA history.
Harrison's reasoning seems more personal and irrational for his own career as a GM if he says that he's only thinking about the next few years instead of the next 10.
The issue here is that Doncic was the face of the franchise. At 25 years old, Doncic already had a boatload of hardware that very few can say they have, and there will only be plenty more to come for the Slovenian superstar.
A player like Doncic only comes around once in a generation. He's LeBron James, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird all in one piece. Harrison didn't need to think about the next decade, as fans would always be eager to see their superstar suit up for what they thought would be many more years. Now, fans in North Texas have to see another great homegrown superstar leave for one of the most valuable sports franchises in the world.
The trade details themselves were more confusing than imaginable. Doncic was blindsided by the trade, as he was reportedly emotional when he heard the trade news. Jason Kidd didn't even know about the trade until it was public knowledge. Mark Cuban had texted former Mavericks forward Chandler Parsons and told him that he was just as surprised as everybody else.
Harrison as a GM has made some of the craziest deals in Maverick history. From Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson to P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford, and time will tell if his trade for Davis can live up to the potential of the other trades he has made.
