With the NBA offseason all but finished, the Dallas Mavericks are looking forward to having a much-improved 2026-2027 season, and a big part of that will be their No. 9 pick in the draft, Morez Johnson Jr. Despite many fans believing he was a questionable pick, a recent poll from ESPN experts suggests that Johnson Jr. is an underrated selection by the Mavericks.
According to multiple polls, Morez Johnson Jr. was voted to have a big impact on winning and to have landed in one of the best situations of anyone in the rookie class. These are great honors, especially since eight players went in front of him, and these poll results hint that the Mavericks struck gold by finding a player who will give them exactly what they need.
ESPN predicts that Morez Johnson Jr. will impact winning as a rookie
The first poll question Morez Johnson Jr. received a vote on (one) was which lottery pick would have the biggest impact on winning this season. And Johnson Jr. receiving any votes on this is exactly why the Mavericks drafted him.
Many Mavericks fans wanted the team to draft a guard, namely Brayden Burries out of Arizona. Given the lack of guard depth and scoring on this team, a guard who can create offense made a lot of sense. However, when the Mavericks went in a different direction, selecting Morez Johnson Jr., it was clear why. They wanted someone who would have a positive impact on the game.
While a guard like Burries might have a higher offensive ceiling, the Mavericks clearly prioritized a foundational anchor in the frontcourt who can impact winning on both sides of the ball. Johnson Jr. fits that bill, and with his NBA-ready build, it could happen as soon as this upcoming season, especially playing next to defensive-minded center Dereck Lively II. Dusty May has also already coached Morez, which is likely why ESPN thinks he will contribute right away.
Dallas is the perfect situation for Morez Johnson Jr.
Another poll question that ESPN experts voted on was which rookie landed in the best situation, and Johnson Jr. actually tied for the most votes (three) on this question alongside Cameron Boozer. Given the fact that Cooper Flagg is on this roster and the Mavericks have hired a new front office committed to youth development, this makes a ton of sense.
First, playing with Cooper Flagg would do wonders for any prospect the Mavericks selected. And it was clear, even during the pre-draft process, that prospects wanted to play in Dallas next to Flagg. Cooper's ability to play on and off the ball and be an elite connective piece is what makes him so special and is also what makes Dallas an ideal landing spot for young players.
Another important thing to remember is that the Mavericks are getting Kyrie Irving back. Having an All-NBA-level guard is always great for a young big man trying to make a name for himself in this league. And Morez will be able to complement both Irving and Flagg extremely well, even in his first season.
While the Mavericks currently have a logjam in their frontcourt, there is still no doubt that Morez Johnson Jr. is a big part of their plans for this season and especially in the future. ESPN experts are validating this draft pick with their recent poll, and they're not wrong. Johnson Jr. is one of the more NBA-ready lottery picks, and the situation he's landed in, especially with this former college coach, will help him grow on this team for years to come.
