The first 15 games of the Dallas Mavericks' 2025-26 NBA campaign could be summed up in a few short words after a disastrous 4-11 start. Not only has the team looked in complete disarray since the opening night tip-off against the San Antonio Spurs, but since the firing of former general manager Nico Harrison earlier in the season, Dallas' upper brass has been focused on other things.

To make matters even worse, more attention is drawn to the Mavericks when it comes to off-court issues, such as who the team's future general manager could be, rather than their on-court product. While distractions could be to blame for the team's 4-11 start, NBA insider Marc Stein recently revealed that the Mavericks have recently assigned former majority owner Mark Cuban to an advisory role, while the team undergoes major change.

Not only has Cuban sort of become a martyr for Mavericks fans since the fallout of the Luka Doncic trade, but after being stripped of many of his basketball titles with the Mavericks after the 2024 trade deadline, Cuban may be the perfect name to establish a culture while the team is still searching for an identity.

Fans should have no reason to worry with Cuban back in the front office

It may seem like a decade since Cuban last had a meaningful role within the Mavericks organization after Harrison seemingly made him an outsider looking in after electing to sell the team to now owner, Patrick Dumont, but in a series of moves, Cuban is back in an important role.

"Former Mavericks majority owner Mark Cuban, who had largely been stripped of basketball operations authority for the past season and a half, essentially dating to the February trade deadline back in 2024, has indeed been re-integrated (subscription required) by new Mavericks operating owner Patrick Dumont to provide input and counsel." Stein would write in his latest piece.

Stein would later go on to add that co-general managers Matt Riccardi and Michael Finley remain in lockstep with Dumont when it comes to real decisions being made. With this in mind, it fully appears that Cuban is strictly in an advisory role, which is something that he is not a stranger to.

Dating back to his time as the Mavericks' owner, Cuban was often the final decision maker and even the primary brain when it came to some of the Mavericks' offseason moves and trades. No matter how controversial some of the moves that Cuban would go on to make, after the decision to trade Doncic, fans would beg for Cuban to somehow work his magic and get Doncic back in the building or take over as head decision maker.

It may not have been the exact route that fans were expecting Cuban to take to get back with the team and its decision makers in some capacity, but Cuban being back in the front office and having influence is something every fan was begging for. With so much attention being on the Mavericks until after the trade deadline, it will not only be interesting to see what direction the team heads in, but what influence Cuban may have on some of the moves that are waiting to happen.

By the sound of it, Cuban is still not the final decision maker, but he is finally in a role where his influence and experience with professional basketball will pay off in this new era of Mavericks basketball.
