The Dallas Mavericks began a new era of basketball this week when they parted ways with former general manager Nico Harrison. It's a move Mavs fans had been dying for, as they had never gotten over the infamous Luka Doncic trade. It was clear that the organization listened to the fans' frustration and wanted a new change as well.
So, with the team under new management, fans and media are starting to question Dallas' future. They wonder what the team's outlook is. Are there any big trades in the near future? Will Anthony Davis still be on the roster by the end of the season?
Luckily, the team seemed to have responded to some of the questions above. Sports Illustrated reported that the team is ready to make some moves and has even included Mark Cuban in their plans. In simple terms, "big changes" could be on the horizon, as the team seems ready to clean up the mess Harrison made.
Mavericks are already exploring major trades with Harrison gone
The Open Floor newsletter, written by Chris Mannix, discussed the ramifications of Harrison's firing. The article explained that with new changes underway, "radical changes have already been discussed by Dallas' new brain trust." Fans can decode this however they please, but it seems that roster moves, such as a trade, could be coming in the near future.
One player fans have thrown around in trade discussions is Anthony Davis. The Dallas big man was a key part of the Doncic trade and a centerpiece expected to help turn things around. He was the sole reason Harrison pulled the plug on trading Doncic, as he believed Davis' two-way capabilities could help the team win a title in the near future. Quicker than Doncic could.
Yet, injuries have limited his time with the team, and fans are ready to move on.
It's quite possible Davis could actually be on the move. Many analysts and players believe he might be on the move, as teams like the Miami Heat or Detroit Pistons could end up pursuing him. If you recall, Miami is no stranger to getting big-name talent. So, Dallas might have options if they decide to get rid of Harrison's centerpiece.
However, Dallas won't be quick to trade Davis unless Mark Cuban has a say. The former majority owner is now back and helping Patrick Dumont after being pushed out by Harrison. Remember, two months ago, Cuban implied how some things happened internally and that the person who traded Doncic "didn't want" him there. This seems to have changed, though, as Cuban is now "back at the table."f
This is good news for fans. Cuban played a major role in constructing rosters that had early success in the 2000s and was a big part of their 2011 run.
So, this is exciting news for Mavs fans. Cuban is back, and big changes are underway. The organization must now heal broken hearts everywhere and clean up the leftover damage. We could see a complete overhaul by the time that the trade deadline comes and goes, and this is likely the best plan of action to build around Cooper Flagg.
Basically, the team should turn the rumors of "big changes" into a reality. They must do everything in their power to move forward and make Mavericks basketball fun again. It looks like the sun is shining once again in Dallas, as the Nico firing could be the start of something new.
