The Dallas Mavericks have had a long last seven days that started with the shocking trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. Within that week, the NBA's trade deadline closed and Mavs fans had to say goodbye to multiple fan-favorite role players as Maxi Kleber, Markieff Morris, and Quentin Grimes were all traded.
Despite a somber week in the DFW area, Mavericks fans have embraced the new era of Mavericks basketball after Max Christie's impressive start to his Dallas career. In addition to Christie making a boom in his first few games as a Maverick, Anthony Davis made his debut during Saturday's matinee affair against the Houston Rockets.
Davis not only made his presence known with a historic first-half performance, but he also made it a clear priority to embrace the Mavericks' culture in spite of a scary non-contact injury. While Davis' injury initially sucked the air out of the arena, Dallas rallied back to win 116-105 and Davis would later clear the air and say his injury shouldn't be serious.
Despite an electrifying day for Mavericks fans, Jason Kidd was once again asked about his role in the Doncic trade during the pregame presser. Kidd not only doubled down on the role he played during trade negotiations, but his comments may have exposed an underlying flaw about how the trade went down.
Kidd doubles down about being blindsided by the Doncic trade
It wouldn't be a total lie to say the Doncic trade could be the most shocking deal in NBA history. With this in mind, you would expect the front office and coaching staff to be in the know because of the magnitude of this trade.
Nico Harrison not only came out publicly about operating in the dark with Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka, but he would also go on to say that Jason Kidd was not in the know about what was going to go down until the deal was nearly announced.
It may be hard for some Maverick fans to believe that Kidd had zero idea about a potential Doncic and Davis swap, but when asked about his role before Saturday's matinee game, Kidd double-downed about not knowing until the deal was completed.
This is not only a potentially concerning fact, but when later asked if he wanted a say in how the roster is constructed, Kidd responded by saying no.
"No, I'm the one who gets the groceries, and I've got to figure out how to use it," Kidd said. "I don't wanna be the one that's buying the groceries, just give me the groceries and I'll figure it out."
Jason Kidd doubled down on not knowing about the Luka Doncic trade until right before it went down, and was asked if he was fine with not knowing until the end:

“Ya, I’m an employee of the Mavs.”
When asked if he wants any say on how the roster is constructed:

This is not only a surprise to most fans but Kidd's reluctance to be in trade negotiations could prove to be a flaw of the Mavericks. Without Kidd's voice in trade negations, the team may pull the trigger on an untimely trade, despite previous conversations.
Fans have yet to know if this is what went down when Doncic was shockingly traded last week, but Kidd's voice being in active trade talks could prove beneficial for Dallas. Kidd would not only have a say in the construction of the roster but he would be able to veto potential deals.
While the fallout of the Doncic trade is still a hot topic, Kidd's job is now to piece together how to make the best rotations if the Mavs have any wish to return to the NBA Finals.
