In the third quarter of Anthony Davis' Dallas Mavericks debut against the Houston Rockets, Mavs fans' hearts sunk to their stomachs as Davis went down with a non-contact injury while playing defense.
Davis was in the middle of a dominant debut as he finished with 26 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists, and three blocks, but his night ended after trying to slide over to defend Alperen Sengun. While Davis made it down to the other end of the floor after that play, he stood in the right corner near the Mavericks bench and was not involved in the following play. Davis waited for Max Christie to foul a Rockets player so Daniel Gafford could sub in for him, and he almost immediately went back to the locker room.
Mavericks fans were fearful, as Davis' debut was about as perfect as they could have imagined, but some of the panic from these fans was released after the Mavericks announced that it was a lower-body injury and that he was doubtful to return. Being doubtful rather than out showed major promise, and Davis cleared the air on exactly what happened when he got injured during his media session at his locker after the game.
Anthony Davis wipes Mavericks fans' fear about his injury away
Davis' self-provided injury update was exactly what Mavericks fans wanted to hear, as many fans feared that it could be an injury that would keep him out for a while considering that it was a non-contact injury and he looked to be in tons of pain, but it doesn't seem like he is going to miss significant time.
"Leg got tight, like a little spasm," Davis said. "Obviously dealing with the ab strain still, so just tried to get it loose, it wouldn’t really loosen up, let go. But it’s nothing serious. I’m fine."

Davis said that the injury he suffered was in his quad/groin area, and he seemed to be in good spirits when talking about it. His update helped give Mavericks fans reassurance that he could be rejoining the team soon, and with him in the lineup and healthy, this team has the potential to be one of the best teams in the Western Conference.
Davis looked unstoppable in his debut as he was finishing everything around the rim, throwing down thunderous slams, blocking shots, and knocking down open jumpers, and he helped ease Mavericks fans' minds about going from the Luka Doncic to the Anthony Davis era.
While even Davis understands that the fans in Dallas will always love Doncic, games like today show why Nico Harrison went out and traded for him. He is truly one of the best defenders in the NBA, and Davis getting back to playing power forward should benefit him tremendously.
He and Daniel Gafford or Dereck Lively II on the floor together is going to be a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses, and when Davis is on the floor, he is truly one of the most impossible-to-guard players in the NBA. It remains unclear if Davis will miss time with the injury that he suffered on Saturday, but the fact that he spoke to the media and made it seem like it is nothing to worry about should give Mavericks fans hope. He has done a great job at staying on the floor over the last few years during his time with the Los Angeles Lakers, and Mavericks fans are hoping this good injury luck continues into his tenure in Dallas.
Davis' next chance to return to the hardwood from his abdominal/groin injury will be on Monday against the Sacramento Kings, and we'll have you covered with all the latest.
