The unthinkable happened on Saturday night.
With the trade deadline being just five days away, the Dallas Mavericks made the most shocking trade in franchise history and possibly NBA history. It has been known for weeks that Dallas was looking to upgrade their frontcourt, specifically looking for a defensive ace, but absolutely no one could have ever expected that Luka Doncic was an option to be traded.
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the Mavericks have traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers as part of a three-team deal.
Mavericks do the unthinkable and trade Luka Doncic to Lakers
In exchange for Doncic, Dallas netted Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick while the Lakers acquired Doncic, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris. The Utah Jazz landed Jalen Hood-Schifino, a 2025 second-round pick from the LA Clippers, and a 2025 second-round pick from the Mavs.
While Dallas lands one of the most unstoppable bigs in the NBA in Davis and a talented young guard in Christie, along with a first-round pick in 2029, this has to be the most unthinkable return in a trade package that Mavericks fans could have hoped for. Only one first-round pick for a player who has all-time great written all over him.
What's an even crazier tidbit about all of this is that Charania reported that the Mavericks "offered" Doncic to the Lakers. Doncic did not ask out. Moving on from a unanimous top-five player in the NBA is a move that no one could have ever expected Nico Harrison to make, and the future of the Mavericks could have just been changed forever.
Dallas moved on from Doncic less than a year after he led them to their first NBA Finals appearance since 2011, and now Davis and Kyrie Irving are the new faces of the franchise. Irving has been excellent recently during Doncic's absence, and now the potential all-time great duo of Irving and Doncic will be a distant memory for Mavericks fans.
Everything changes for both teams involved, as the Mavericks got rid of Doncic just a few months before they were eligible to give him one of the biggest contract extensions in league history, and the Lakers landed Doncic to play next to LeBron James until it's time for him to retire at some point over the next few years. There seems to have been some concern from Dallas' end about giving him this extension, and now they will be forced to build around Davis, Dereck Lively II, P.J. Washington, and Irving moving forward.
One of the biggest issues about Doncic that seems to have been part of the reason they moved him is his "conditioning issues" according to Tim MacMahon, and although that issue continued to reappear at the beginning of seasons, this is an unbelievable decision from the Mavericks, to say the least.
The NBA world is going to be buzzing for the next weeks about this move, and we'll have you covered with all the latest on this unbelievable trade between Dallas and Los Angeles as the details roll in.
