'Fire Nico' chants weren't even the most uncomfortable part of Luka Doncic's return

After the Dallas Mavericks traded away Luka Doncic in a blockbuster trade in the middle of the night, things with the Mavs organization immediately backfired.

Fans provided a casket near American Airlines Center and protested the trade immediately, with calls to fire GM Nico Harrison. This garnered more support after a series of injuries hindered Dallas, and their season slowly began to crumble down while the Los Angeles Lakers rose in the Western Conference standings.

While the Mavericks have gained relevance since almost being forced to forfeit a game, the Mavs now have some teeth battling for a playoff spot in next week's play-in tournament. Until then, Doncic is a Laker, and Anthony Davis is a Maverick, and fans are obviously nowhere close to forgiving Harrison at all for making an absolutely unfathomable trade.

Mavs fans cheering on a Laker represents unprecedented territory

Mavs fans have gone so far as to do something they've never done before: cheer for a guy wearing the purple and gold.

When Mavs fans were cheering "fire Nico" in the first quarter of Doncic's historic return to Dallas, that sort of behavior was expected, but after an emotional tribute video was presented for Doncic in his remarkable seven seasons as a Maverick, it was pretty clear that Mavs fans were going to have Doncic's back.

After Doncic's first bucket, the crowd roared in applause for a Laker superstar, something that we would've never thought of as happening in the sports world. When Doncic checked out for the first time, fans gave him a bow for a solid first-quarter performance.

It was mutual between the fanbase and Doncic that a special bond was ripped away, and for the next generation, or maybe more, Mavs fans will never forgive Nico Harrison. People will never forget the feeling of thinking that ESPN's Shams Charania was hacked when the trade was announced. They'll never forget the fact that a potential future MVP candidate was traded away for a lackluster return.

Of course, fans should be excited for the future of Anthony Davis teaming up with Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson, but the fact of the matter is that people don't like it when their generational superstar is torn away from them. Doncic not only represented the Mavs, but Dallas was his home, and from an NBA Finals appearance from just a season ago, he looked like the face of the city who wasn't even in his prime yet.

Mavs fans have every right to still voice their opinion to Harrison, but the way it's been done in cheering for the Lakers is something that no real Dallas fan would ever have imagined.
