The 2024-25 season for the Dallas Mavericks was a memorable one for being an absolute struggle. From trading away Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, to Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis both getting injured, and to failing to make it back to the NBA Finals and getting eliminated in the Play-In Tournament by the Memphis Grizzlies.
Then, the basketball gods smiled down on Big D as the Mavericks won the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery with a 1.8 percent chance of doing so. Last night, the Mavericks made the selection to draft Duke's Cooper Flagg with the first overall pick in the draft.
Flagg is going to bring a ton of excitement to play in Dallas and give Mavs fans hope again after the Doncic trade. However, even with drafting Flagg, the NBA is still facing the controversy surrounding the draft lottery results, whether they like it or not.
Mavericks are still getting accused of rigging the draft lottery
Prior to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver walking on stage to announce the Mavericks' selection of Flagg, a fan in the stands can be heard yelling, "Dallas was rigged." It seems that NBA fans are still questioning whether or not the lottery was rigged in order for the Mavericks to get Flagg, and the senseless conspiracy theories are flying once again.
The heartbreak of Mavs fans after the Doncic trade led to excitement after winning the draft lottery, and while Mavs fans are happy now, they'll never forget the pain they went through after the Doncic trade.
From a funeral outside of American Airlines Center, to having "fire Nico" chants erupt at a Dallas Stars NHL game, to having fans removed for chanting for him to be fired at a Mavericks home game, and more.
Even at the Mavericks draft party at the AAC last night, Mavs fans were still chanting "fire Nico." It still seems that even getting Flagg isn't enough for the Mavs fans to give Harrison another chance to win them back over.

Conspiracies that the NBA may have had the lottery fixed to protect Harrison seemed real at one point. For all the hatred and heat Harrison got for trading Doncic, it seems that the Mavericks winning the draft lottery to get Flagg may have saved Harrison's job.
With Flagg on board, it offers another chance for Harrison to build a strong team around a first overall pick who has a ton of hype at just 18 years old. Flagg averaged over 19 points and 7.5 rebounds per game and was a standout at Duke.
Flagg will have a lot to prove with being a Maverick. Mavs fans are desperate to see Flagg have an immediate impact on the team, just like Doncic did when he was a rookie. Flagg will have a lot of weight on his shoulders with Irving recovering from an ACL tear. However, playing with Davis can help Flagg develop with his size.
Dallas will be buzzing with Flagg on the team, but the NBA will still catch heat with the Mavericks winning the lottery. Whether fans like it or not, Flagg has a chance to be one of the best Mavericks of all time.
