It's safe to say that the playoffs have already started for the Dallas Mavericks. They're in win-now mode with time ticking by slowly as the team awaits for Anthony Davis to make his return.
With big guys still sidelined, P.J. Washington and Dwight Powell will have to be the big men holding down the fort until then. It's still unknown as to what the Mavs' season will look like in the end, but one thing that's been talked about is the resilience of the Mavs to compete, even with the team being shorthanded for a long period of time now.
Davis has made appearances for the Mavericks since his injury by cheering on the sidelines for teammates, telling us that he has bought into this group. He recently made headlines regarding the trade, telling everybody that he isn't so sure that more people other than ownership didn't have a say in the infamous Luka Doncic trade.
Davis not buying chatter of Lakers and Mavs GMs keeping trade a secret
It seems like Doncic has had countless opportunities to speak on his side of the trade, but for Davis, we really haven't gotten to hear his side of the bargain much, especially since he has only officially spoke to the media twice since the move happened (once in his introductory press conference and once after his Mavs debut).
Broderick Turner from the Los Angeles Times talked to Davis about his thoughts on what was a wild night on February 1. Davis wasn't buying the fact that only the GMs knew about the blockbuster trade, and Davis didn't mince words in giving his opinion.
“Everybody’s saying nobody knew and all this other (expletive)," Davis said. "I just don’t believe it. But, hey man, I’m past that. I’m ready to move forward with Dallas, try to get a championship there with these guys. First off, getting back on the floor and get ready to compete. All the emotions, that (expletive) lasted that night when it was just a shock.”
The trade being so tightlipped is one of the craziest parts about the trade, and easily one of the most controversial too. While it seemed like Rob Pelinka, Nico Harrison, Jeanie Buss, and Patrick Dumont were the only four people who knew about the trade when it went down, Davis isn't buying that. He seems to think that other people knew, regardless of how shocking the move was for him.
Of course Davis was flabbergasted about the fact that he just got traded in the middle of the night when no one expected it. After all, Doncic was hit like a bus in the same way. Davis couldn't even go to his own front office to ask why the trade happened, he had to go to his championship teammate, LeBron James, to blow off some steam.
What happened that night between the Mavs and Lakers organization will be something only the front office will ever be able to speak about, and that may be the only truth we'll ever get. Although Davis' words are reassuring for Mavs fans when Davis talks about trying to move forward and win with Dallas. He's in win-now mode and spoke true to his words following what was an epic debut before his injury.
"We're going to do something special with y'all man," Davis said as he and Max Christie were arriving in Dallas.
What the Mavericks got before Davis' injury is what we hope to expect when he returns. The Mavericks organization just better hope he stays on the court to fulfill their promise to bring a championship defense to Dallas one day.
