It's already been a long week for the Dallas Mavericks, as the trade deadline has hit the team in ways that still seem unexplainable.
After the Mavericks got Anthony Davis from the Los Angeles Lakers, questions began to arise about thepresent and future of the team, as it seems like Dallas just traded away the face of the franchise.
Luka Doncic, one of the greatest basketball players in the world just got traded to the one of the most valuable brands in sports, the Los Angeles Lakers. After Doncic was greeted with a warm welcome from Lakers GM Rob Pelinka and Lakers head coach JJ Redick, Doncic indicated that he had planned all along to stay with Dallas and sign a supermax contract this summer.
On the other hand, Anthony Davis said hello to Dallas and gave some remarks on what his role will be like and when he can possibly make his Mavs debut.
Davis' expected Mavericks debut date revealed
Davis was just like everybody else in the world when they saw the alert from ESPN's Shams Chanaria.
"I was in shock, obviously." Davis said. "Had no idea that it was happening, but now, I'm over it, trying to get ready to play with Dallas."
An NBA champion and 10-time NBA All-Star was traded for a scoring champion and five-time All-NBA First Team player at the age of 25. While it feels like fans of both sides were blindsided by this historic trade, both Davis and Doncic have had to change their worlds in the past three days.
Davis and Doncic are going through injuries at this time, bringing the question as to when Davis will actually make his debut and return from his current abdominal strain. It looks to be both guys making their respective debuts at around the same time. Davis talked about going through a few workouts day-by-day to make sure he recovers properly.
"More than likely Saturday," Davis said when answering about when he could possibly make his Mavericks debut.
Update: Marc Stein reported that Davis is expected to make his Mavericks debut on Saturday against the Houston Rockets.
Dallas plays the Rockets on Saturday at home, and while that seems like his most likely return date, he didn’t rule out playing on Thursday against the Boston Celtics depending on how his workouts go over the next few days.
There's no doubt that Davis in a Mavs uniform will do some great things, his motivation will be at an all-time high with Dallas granting his latest wish that he wanted to fulfill in a Laker uniform, and that was to play at the four with another big to play the five.
Davis indicated to the media that his request will likely be fulfilled with Daniel Gafford, Dereck Lively II and Kylor Kelley playing alongside him while he's in the game. It’s clear Davis will play some center, but it sounds like he is going to play his natural position of power forward more often than not.
As the shock wave starts to fade and reality starts to kick in, Mavs fans are right to say that this is no doubt that risky business. Trading away one of the greatest players in the world at 25 years old for a 31-year-old Davis is risky, but like Mavs GM Nico Harrison said, time will only tell if he made the right decision.
