Dallas Mavericks: Dirk Nowitzki undecided on retiring after the season

Dallas Mavericks star and future Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki shared an update on his future and what is going into that decision for him.

The Dallas Mavericks are entering what they hope is a turning point season for the franchise. The Mavs have missed the playoff two straight seasons, but the additions of Dennis Smith Jr. and Luka Doncic in the last two drafts gives the team an exciting young backcourt. Dallas is hoping to take a step forward and return to the postseason this year.

Star player Dirk Nowitzki is hoping the team makes that leap as well. Entering his historic 21st consecutive season with the Mavericks, of course, questions about Dirk’s future are going to come up. He just turned 40 in June, and the 13-time All-Star is excited about this season. Will it be Dirk’s last campaign, though?

Nowitzki undecided

Dirk Nowitzki came out to the Mavericks Summer Hoops Camp on Aug. 8 to help out the children. He also sat down for an interview with media. When asked about possibly entering his final season, Dirk’s answer was one of uncertainty. Read for yourself below in the Tweets from Dwain Price.

Nowitzki did not tip his hand either way from those quotes and it is believable that even he is unsure about retiring. If he still feels good and plays at a high level like last season why not come back for another ride. Improvements from the Mavs make his return even more likely.

Dirk does not want a farewell tour

Nowitzki has stated many times that he does not want a farewell season like the one Kobe Bryant had in 2016. Dirk likely goes out the way of Tim Duncan with an offseason announcement that is playing days are over.

The question is still when will that day come? Nobody, but Dirk knows the answer.

Dirk Nowitzki is uncertain whether the upcoming season will be his last in the NBA. The Dallas Mavericks hope that Luka Doncic steps up and becomes their star player after Dirk.
