The Mavs have waived backup forward Josh McRoberts. The Mavs acquired McRoberts from the Miami Heat before the season.

The Mavs have waived power forward Josh McRoberts after the bench warmer appeared in just two games this season. The Mavs absorbed McRoberts’ contract in a salary dump trade from the Miami Heat along with a second round pick in exchange for center A.J. Hammons.

McRoberts had been dealing with a long-term foot injury that kept him out of the Mavs’ rotation for the entire season. McRoberts will now be searching for his eighth NBA team in eleven seasons.

McRoberts is now free to sign with any team who might be looking to add some depth to their bench. The San Antonio Spurs, the Golden State Warriors, and the Toronto Raptors are teams that could use a veteran big man to add to their bench.

The move comes as no surprise for the Mavericks, who are clearly in a race to the bottom of the standings and are in prime position to secure the first pick in the draft. The Mavericks felt it was time to let McRoberts explore his opportunities elsewhere and help him land with a team with a chance at a playoff spot.

The Mavs now have an empty spot on their roster, and could look to fill the spot with a player from the D-League or the buyout market. The team is looking for younger, more developmental pieces to help accelerate their rebuild and add as many young assets as possible.

The Mavs are now extremely thin at the power forward and center spots. Dirk Nowitzki, Dwight Powell, Salah Mejri, and Maxi Kleber are the only players on the roster that are receiving playing time while Nerlens Noel is hurt.

The Mavs are getting closer to the NBA draft and should be looking to add a big man such as Marvin Bagley or DeAndre Ayton.
