Zaccharie Risacher’s Mavericks future could be determined quickly next season

Zaccharie Risacher starts the 2026-27 season with a deadline. The Dallas Mavericks must decide whether to exercise his team option (1 year, $17.4 million) for the 2027-28 season. The deadline to make that decision is October 31, just six games into the season.

Dallas will have to make a decision about the young forward's future with the team beyond next season almost right away.

Mavericks must make this decision on Risacher's future quickly

Risacher currently projected to come off the bench for the Mavericks. He likely won't even have enough time to prove his worth in those six games.

That means the Mavericks could pick up his team option regardless of how he performs at the beginning of the season. That doesn't guarantee his future with the team, though, because he will have to continually prove his worth.

Risacher's battle won't end with Dallas opting into their team option.

The Mavericks traded away Ryan Nembhard to get him after Nembhard led the team in assists last season. Taking a flyer on Risacher was an easy choice, but that doesn't mean he'll have a massively long leash with Dallas. Risacher will have to show something he didn't with the Atlanta Hawks to earn a long-term spot with the Mavericks.

Picking up Risacher's offer does not guarantee him as a key piece in Dallas, though, as the Hawks exercised his 2026-27 team option and still chose to trade him away this offseason.

Risacher will have to prove he's worth the money

With the way Dallas' roster is constructed, Risacher will likely be coming off the bench behind Max Christie this season. Both are solid, exciting young prospects with lots to prove, but Christie's contract is much smaller. Risacher comes to the team as the sixth-highest earner and will jump to fifth during the 2027-28 season with his team option.

There may be a world where the Mavericks keep both players, but if they don't fit on the court together, the Mavericks may have to move on from one of them. Christie's player option for the 2027-28 season is almost half of what Risacher will be making, and it will make less and less sense to keep someone making double the starter's salary on the bench.

There is also a scenario where Christie believes he deserves more and chooses not to exercise his player option, hoping to earn a bigger contract in free agency with the Mavericks or somewhere else. Losing Christie like this would be unfortunate because, without a first-round pick this year, the Mavericks have to get something in return for letting a valuable player like him go.

Risacher will need to keep proving himself if he wants another contract

The next obstacle Risacher will face is proving he's worth a further contract extension after this 2027-28 season. The Mavericks will have a bit more time to decide, but Risacher will end up a restricted free agent in the 2028 offseason if the Mavericks don't offer him a new contract before then.

Risacher is no stranger to having to prove himself.

The Atlanta Hawks moved on from the 2024 1st overall pick after just two seasons. So far, he hasn't proved worthy of that selection, but time will tell if, under a new set of circumstances and far fewer expectations, Risacher can thrive.

If all goes well, perhaps Risacher can carve out a role for himself with the Mavericks and possibly earn a spot in the starting lineup later this season. He has the tools and the support around him to achieve what he could not in Atlanta. He could be poised for a big season and a big career turnaround.
