The Dallas Mavericks entered December at 10-10, and they were in danger of being in the play-in tournament. Superstar Luka Doncic had played well, but the team was inconsistent, so the 23-year-old superstar took matters into his own hands. Dallas went 11-6 in December as number 77 had one of the best months of his NBA career.
Luka missed two games to rest, but he averaged 35.1 points, 9.3 assists, 8.5 rebounds, and 1.6 steals in 36.3 minutes per game as the team went 11-4 with him on the floor. Doncic shot 51.9 percent from the field and 42.4 percent from 3-point range over his otherworldly month that included three 50-point games, and a never before seen 60-point 20-rebound triple-double to defeat the Knicks.
When it came to handing out Player of the Month honors, there was no other choice. Luka won for the third time in his career. He is second all-time in Mavericks history behind Dirk Nowitzki’s six. Here is a look back at Doncic’s incredible month before looking at what is ahead in January.
Luka Doncic wins Player of the Month for December after an otherworldly run
Luka’s numbers were unbelievable in December. He had 12 30-point games, three triple-doubles, seven double-digit assist games, seven double-digit rebound games, and he broke the Mavericks' single-game scoring record. Doncic won two Player of the Week honors and led the Mavericks to six straight victories to close the month that pushed them back into the top four in the Western Conference.
The three-time All-Star did it all as the Mavericks played shorthanded for a significant stretch. Since Dec. 12, Dallas had multiple rotation players on the sidelines in every game. They needed more from Luka to win, and the 23-year-old superstar delivered. He made his case for the best player on the planet with his incredible play.
Congratulations go out to Luka Doncic for winning Player of the Month. It was well-deserved, and it is the latest of many honors for number 77 this season.
The Dallas Mavericks kicked off January with a win over the Houston Rockets, but the schedule stiffens this month. They have 15 games with 11 of them coming against teams that are currently in the top ten in their conference. Can Luka Doncic stay white hot? Will the Mavs keep winning, despite their injuries? Stay tuned to find out.
