Luka Doncic and Slovenia receive difficult draw in 2023 FIBA World Cup
By Tyler Watts
Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic loves to represent his country. He led Slovenia to a fourth-place finish at the 2020 Olympics and a EuroBasket title in 2017. Whenever Doncic is on the court, Slovenia is a feared team that can defeat anyone. The best is still yet to come as Luka plans on winning all the top tournaments for his country.
It is another massive summer for number 77. He is dealing with the disappointment of the Mavericks missing the playoffs for the first time since his rookie campaign, and fans can bet that means Doncic will be motivated to improve his game. Expect a ton of work from the 24-year-old superstar this summer as he looks to win his first NBA MVP honors and get the Mavs back into contention.
Luka will represent Slovenia at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, which starts on Aug. 25. FIBA announced the draw on Saturday, and here is a closer look at what is ahead for Doncic in the competition.
Luka Doncic and Slovenia receive a difficult draw in the 2023 FIBA World Cup
Slovenia was drawn into Group F with Georgia, Venezuela, and Cape Verde. Luka Doncic and company will be heavily favored to win their group, which will likely put them into a second group against Germany and Australia with just two of those three advancing to the quarterfinals.
Dirk Nowitzki’s home country shockingly upset Slovenia in World Cup qualifying last summer before Doncic got the last laugh at EuroBasket. Both were exciting contests, and this summer’s showdown could have more on the line.
Slovenia lost to Australia for the bronze medal in the 2020 Olympics, so Doncic has history and wants a bit of revenge on both national teams. Mavericks teammate Josh Green could suit up for the Australia, and Luka will not want to lose those bragging rights twice. The Aussies are always tough, and they figure to be among the favorites to win the event in the Philippines.
Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic will be looking to prove that he is the best player in the world at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. He will lead Slovenia into the tournament with the goal of winning a gold medal. Team USA figures to have plenty to say about that, and there will be zero easy games as every player will look to shine for their country. Expect plenty of excitement and do not miss a second of action.
