Josh Green's departure from Mavericks signals perfect opportunity for new guard
By Noah Weber
The Dallas Mavericks are in the middle of one of their most impactful offseasons in team history as they found a way to strengthen the roster that took them all the way to the NBA Finals last season, but the free agency buzz has seemingly taken a pause over the last week for Summer League.
Dallas won their first Summer League game of the year on Friday against the Boston Celtics, and Oivier-Maxence Prosper shined as he finished with 22 points. He had a rough start to Summer League, but last night he flashed the potential that everyone is excited about.
While most of the offseason has been exciting for Mavs fans considering that they acquired Klay Thompson through a six-team sign-and-trade, there was also a rough departure mixed into this deal.
Quentin Grimes will shine with Josh Green gone
As part of the sign-and-trade, Dallas sent Josh Green to the Charlotte Hornets. Charlotte had their eyes on Green since the trade deadline, and they were able to add the young guard to their core this summer.
While losing Green hurts as he flashed so much potential through his hustle, energy, and 3-point shooting, his departure created the perfect opportunity for a newly acquired guard for the Mavs.
Dallas traded Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second-round picks to the Detroit Pistons last month for Quentin Grimes, and he has the chance to be a bigger role player than anyone realizes.
Last season, Grimes averaged 7.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 37.2 percent from the field. Although those numbers don't jump off the page, he has the chance to fill in Green's role flawlessly.
Although shooting percentages don't show it, Grimes has the chance to be a better shooter than Green was in Dallas. Grimes is one to take tougher shots than Green, and sometimes he shoots off the dribble, and he'll be getting outstanding looks playing next to Luka Doncic.
Grimes also has the ability to attack closeouts and finish at the rim or dump the ball off to a big, and he is locked in on improving his playmaking. He knows improving his playmaking would take his game to the next level, and he has two bigs that'll make that easy for him.
Defensively, Grimes is a pest who will thrive in Jason Kidd's system. He is an outstanding defender who takes the toughest matchup on the floor with pride and does it effectively.
Stepping into next year, Grimes may be the best guard defender on the team, and the Mavs replaced Derrick Jones Jr.'s point-of-attack defense by trading for him.
While Grimes has plenty to prove after a rough ending to last year with the Pistons, he is poised to fill in Green's role valiantly and could become a fan favorite on the Mavs.
