Jason Kidd's bold plan for Mavericks training camp aims to ignite a blazing start
By Noah Weber
The genesis of Dallas Mavericks training camp is less than a week away, and fans are fired up for the start of next season.
Mavs media day is on September 30, and after that the Mavs will travel to Las Vegas for training camp at UNLV. Dallas will have three practice days in Las Vegas before heading back to Dallas for their open practice on October 6 and their first preseason game on October 7.
Dallas has the best roster they've had since the start of the Luka Doncic era, and Jason Kidd's plan for training camp is going to ensure that the Mavs get off to a hot start.
Kidd plans for Mavericks to have two-a-day practices in Las Vegas
According to NBA insider Marc Stein of DLLS Mavs, Kidd has planned for the Mavs to have two-a-day practices for the first two days in Las Vegas. Dallas will then have a day to bond on October 3 before their final day of practice on October 5.
Stein detailed that this is going to be an "intense training camp," and this is exactly what the Mavs need.
Dallas is coming off a run to the NBA Finals that ended with them losing in five games to the Boston Celtics, and Kidd's plan to have these two-a-day practices with plenty of intensity is going to help the Mavs get started on the right track. This Mavs roster is loaded with plenty of new faces, and getting everyone back in the right headspace before the season starts was a great choice by the Mavs.
Them having the team go to Las Vegas to bond for training camp was already a good decision, and ensuring that this camp is going to be rigorous with multiple practices a day was an even better idea. Dallas doesn't seem to be taking that Finals loss slowly, and they are motivated to get back to the NBA Finals once again.
The Mavs benefitted from their trip to Abu Dhabi and Madrid last preseason due to the numerous bonding experiences, and they are going to get to spend plenty of time together once again during this year's training camp. Many players spoke about how the bonding on their preseason trip last year was huge, and this trip to Las Vegas could help yield similar results.
All eyes will be on Klay Thompson during the preseason as he will be wearing a new jersey for the first time in his NBA career, and he should be a big help to the Mavs' shooting right away. Thompson is locked in on winning his fifth ring with the Mavs, and it also helps that he has gotten to know some of his new teammates already.
Many of the Mavs took a trip to Los Angeles last month to spend time together and train, and Thompson was there. He even took his teammates on a boat trip to Catalina Island, and he deeply cherished that moment.
Kidd and the Mavericks are locking in for another chance at winning the NBA Finals, and this "intense" training camp is going to help them be ready for the long NBA season. Getting started hot is essential in setting the tone for the season, and having everyone on the same page early should work hugely in Dallas' favor.
