The Dallas Mavericks are 2-1 in the NBA Summer League, and both of their first-round picks are playing great basketball.

Dereck Lively II looks like he can eventually become Dallas' starting center, while Olivier-Maxence Prosper is playing solid perimeter defense and flying around the court. Both players are playing like they will get minutes next year and will be good fits with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

Along with Dallas playing in the Suumer League, they've also reportedly been engaging in some trade talks.

Report: Dallas Mavericks tried to trade for three-point marksman, young point guard

According to Tim Cato of The Athletic (subscription required), the Mavs and Pistons discussed a trade that would have sent Killian Hayes and Bojan Bogdanovic to the Mavs, and sent JaVale McGee and Tim Hardaway Jr. to the Pistons. The rest of the details regarding the trade weren't listed, but the talks were "serious."

These talks weren't the first time that Dallas has been in trade rumors surrounding Bogdanovic. There were rumors around the time of the draft that Dallas could trade Hardaway Jr. and the No. 10 pick to the Pistons for Bogdanovic and the No. 31 pick, but the talks never came to fruition.

The recently discussed trade between Detroit and Dallas would have allowed the Mavs to get off both Hardaway Jr. and McGee (two players that have been in trade rumors for weeks) and gave Dallas a great scorer in Bogdanovic and an all-around backup point guard in Hayes.

Last season, Bogdanovic set a new career high in points per game with 21.6. He also shot 41.1 percent from three and knocked down 2.5 threes per game. He would have been the Mavericks' best shooter and given the Mavs another consistent scorer.

Hayes also had a remarkable season for Detroit and would have likely played consistent minutes for Dallas next season. He averaged 10.3 points, 6.2 assists, and 1.4 steals per game. If Dallas made this trade, he likely would have been the leader of Dallas' second unit. He is a phenomenal defender and would have been a great fit. Hayes is also only 21 years old and would have added another young, defensive-minded player to the Mavs' young core.

Although this trade fell through, it doesn't mean that the Mavs and Pistons won't engage in them again. Stay tuned to see if the Mavs can land Bogdanovic in a trade and if they end up moving Hardaway Jr. before the offseason is over.
