Former Maverick reveals 2 free agency signings team must make to win Finals

The Dallas Mavericks' offseason is just beginning. The team started the week by trading up and drafting French forward Melvin Ajinca. To acquire the young wing, Dallas traded their 58th pick and cash considerations to the New York Knicks.

Ajinca has all the intangibles to become the perfect 3-and-D wing for Dallas. He has a 6-foot-7 wingspan and stands just above 6-foot-8. The Mavs draft pick averaged 9.7 points and 3.3 rebounds in France.

That wasn't the only move this week though. Dallas traded shooting guard Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second-round picks to the Detroit Pistons for guard Quentin Grimes. This is a move Dallas desperately needed, as they had been trying to unload Hardaway's contract for years. Grimes on the other hand is a young guard who is an excellent defender and can shoot the ball well from the 3-point line.

However, the Mavericks may not be done making moves. Recently, the team has been linked to four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson. It is reported that the Warriors' guard and the Mavericks "have a strong mutual interest."

This is a move former Maverick Theo Pinson believes Dallas should make. In a recent tweet, he stated what it would take for the Mavs to win it all.

Its possible Pinson might be onto something. As mentioned, Dallas just traded Hardaway Jr. and could be looking for an offensive scorer off the bench. Last season, Hardaway Jr. averaged 14.4 points per game during the regular season, but his numbers fell drastically during the playoffs.

This is something Dallas struggled with in the playoffs. The team failed to find a consistent scorer outside of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Rookie Dereck Lively II was the team's leading sixth man during the postseason, as he averaged 7.9 points per game.

Thompson could easily fill the void for Dallas. He is a high proficient scorer who can still perform at a high level. Last season, he shot 38.7 percent from the 3-point line, dropping 17.9 points a game. Before the 2023-24 season, he had averaged above 20 points per game over the past seven years. Thompson also has plenty of postseason experience, as he could help a team trying to win their first title since 2011.

As for Spencer Dinwiddie, he has plenty of ties to the Mavericks. Dallas tried to pursue the former guard last season. Dinwiddie ended up spurning the Mavs and signing with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Dinwiddie struggled in his first season with the Lakers averaging 6.8 points per game in 24.2 minutes of action. He struggled in the postseason shooting 25 percent. However, he may have been on the wrong offense.

Remember it wasn't too long ago Dinwiddie played a key role in helping the Mavs advance to the Western Conference Finals. He was a reliable scorer who shot above 40 percent from long range.

Either way, Thompson and Dinwiddie would be ideal additions for the Mavs. They could both easily come off the bench or start in Thompson's case and knock down shots.

Nico Harrison will have some tough decisions once free agency begins later today.
