The Dallas Mavericks had a busy Thursday, as they traded for Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington.
Both trades make this team significantly better, and the Mavs were able to pull off these trades by only giving away one rotation player in Grant Williams.
Dallas now appears to have a loaded roster for the playoff push, and they also happen to have an open roster spot after today's trades for Washington and Gafford.
Dallas Mavericks to pursue former fan-favorite guard on buyout market
The Mavs could go in several different directions on the buyout market with their open roster spot, but one pressing need that no one is talking about is their need for a backup point guard.
Even though Kyrie Irving is back in the lineup, the Mavs need a player who can lead the bench unit when both Irving and Luka Doncic are on the bench. Dante Exum was expected to be this player but has been injury-prone as of late. He isn't the creator that the Mavs need, but a player who has already proven he can thrive in Dallas is now available.
The Toronto Raptors are planning to waive Spencer Dinwiddie, and the Mavs are expected to be among the teams interested in signing him according to a report from NBA Insider Marc Stein.
Dinwiddie was part of Dallas' 2022 team that made a run to the Western Conference Finals, and he was a key piece of that team. He can hit threes off the catch or off the dribble, attack the rim, and is an extremely underrated creator. Dinwiddie can do everything that the Mavs need out of their backup point guard, and signing him could turn the Mavs into NBA Finals contenders.
