The Dallas Mavericks are off to a bit of a slow start this season. They are currently 11-11 and barely hanging onto the tenth and final spot in the play-in tournament. Luka Doncic is producing MVP numbers, but the lack of talent around him has shown through. The Mavs are missing shots, struggling on the glass, and searching for a third playmaker behind Doncic and Spencer Dinwiddie.
Dallas recently signed Kemba Walker in hopes the veteran can be that third ball-handler. He is still working his way into game shape, but the six-foot point guard could be the scorer and playmaker off the bench that the team desperately needs. Walker’s knees are problematic, so counting on massive contributions is not wise. Getting anything from Kemba is a win for the Mavericks.
Signing Walker has not stopped the Mavs front office from trying to address their playmaking issues. According to Fox Sport’s Ric Bucher, Dallas is interested in Derrick Rose. Here is a look at the latest, and what fans should expect from the Mavericks before the trade deadline.
Rumors: Dallas Mavericks interested in Derrick Rose trade
Bucher notes that the Knicks want to be competitive, and they are willing to spend their stockpile of draft assets to stay competitive. Rose’s playing time has decreased this season after they signed Jalen Brunson away from the Mavericks, so would New York be willing to dump D-Rose for a second-round pick before looking to improve their roster elsewhere?
The Mavs are unlikely to trade a first-round pick. They still owe their 2023 first-rounder to the Knicks from the original Kristaps Porzingis trade with a top-ten protection. Dallas expects it to convey in the summer, and they will have a full stockpile of first-rounders to deal after draft night. That should allow Dallas to chase any star player that becomes available.
The Mavs will be looking to make trades ahead of February’s deadline, but they will be smaller moves on the margins. Dallas has two second-round picks available to trade, and their front office will likely try to buy low on an underperforming talent.
The Dallas Mavericks are interested in Derrick Rose to fill their ball-handling and playmaking needs. Will they acquire the former MVP? Stay tuned to find out.
