The Dallas Mavericks were in the Western Conference Finals in 2022. This season, they failed to even qualify for the Play-In Tournament.

Amid their disappointing season, they made a huge splash, trading for Kyrie Irving at the deadline. They sacrificed some depth and future flexibility to make the move, but it didn’t pay off. Injuries got in the way, but the experiment failed in the short term. The Mavericks missed the postseason completely despite being led by All-Star starters.

Now, Dallas faces a very difficult decision this summer regarding the future of Irving, as the star point guard will be an unrestricted free agent.

3 reasons the Dallas Mavericks shouldn't bring back Kyrie Irving

According to sources who spoke with Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report, Irving and the Mavericks had a “handshake deal” in place when Dallas traded for him at the deadline.

That being said, Irving has committed to places in the past just to go back on his word. And on top of that, outside of the fact that Dallas could be hit with a tampering charge, nothing is guaranteed until a contract is signed.

Not only will Dallas have to decide whether or not to bring Irving back, but they’ll also have to worry about Irving’s personal decision. He could simply choose to ditch Dallas and sign elsewhere.

All in all, the Mavericks could be better off letting Irving walk for several reasons. The star point guard is great, but in the short and long term, he may not be worth keeping around.

With that in mind, here are three reasons why the Dallas Mavericks should walk away from Kyrie Irving.
