4 Dallas Mavericks players who are primed to disappoint this season
By Jaren Boslow
The tip-off of the 2024-25 NBA season is right around the corner and the Dallas Mavericks couldn't have more hype surrounding them as they head into a pivotal season in the Luka Doncic era.
After reaching the NBA Finals, the Mavericks were primed to have a great offseason, and that's exactly what they did. They started their slew of moves by trading for Quentin Grimes and signing Klay Thompson just a few days later.
Grimes will add much-needed defensive depth at the point of attack and elite shot-making from behind the arc. In his first two seasons with the New York Knicks, Grimes shot an impressive 38 percent from behind the arc at just under six attempts per game.

The case for Thompson is even easier to make considering the 13-year veteran has four rings under his belt as a Golden State Warrior. Not only did Thompson play a pivotal role for the Warriors in their dynasty run, but Thompson will likely have a similar role in Dallas. Thompson will once again be asked to knock down open threes at a high clip and with Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic spacing the floor, this could make his job easier.
However, these weren't the Mavericks' only moves during this important offseason. The Mavericks would then sign Naji Marshall, who by many is considered to be the most underrated signing of the summer. They then would sign former guard Spencer Dinwiddie. Dallas then rounded out its roster by resigning fan-favorite forward Markieff Morris to a one-year deal.
Despite the Mavericks bringing in many new names to better help their championship odds, this may mean some Mavs fall short of expectations in this upcoming season.
4. Klay Thompson
While Thompson was the most marquee signing of the summer, the fact remains that the 34-year-old has suffered two career-defining injuries in the last five years.
As a Maverick, Thompson will be asked to turn back the clock defensively with Doncic and Irving in the starting lineup. Not only could this potentially fracture Thompson's ceiling as a Mav, but the former Warrior's last game in Golden State ended with an embarrassing send-off as he went 0-10 from the field and dropped a goose egg in the most important game of the Warriors' season.
Despite disappointing in his last game as a Warrior, Thompson's shooting won't be the main concern for the 13-year veteran. With a potentially heavy offensive workload and needing to be a plus defender in the current starting lineup, Thompson's time in Dallas could be injury-riddled.
Offensively, Thompson will have it much easier than his time in Golden State with Doncic and Irving dishing him the ball. Thompson has also made a living by making difficult shots in the pick and pop. While he may be asked to take more shots in a Mavericks uniform, he should have an easier time getting to his spots on the floor with both P.J. Washington and Dereck Lively II screening for him.
Regardless of Thompson's health, when he is on the floor he will be a player opposing teams must keep in check if they hope to stay in the game.
