Dallas Mavericks ink legendary sharpshooter to three-year deal
By Noah Weber
The first couple of hours of NBA free agency were quiet for Dallas Mavericks fans.
Dallas didn't make a move until late yesterday evening when they signed Naji Marshall to a three-year deal, and that marked the end of the road for Derrick Jones Jr. as he signed with the LA Clippers.
While re-signing Jones Jr. seemed like Dallas' biggest priority at one point, their No. 1 priority shifted.
Dallas Mavericks sign Klay Thompson to three-year deal
Dallas shifted their priority to pulling off a sign and trade to land former Golden State Warriors sharpshooter Klay Thompson, who they had been linked to since April, and Nico Harrison and company made the deal happen on Monday.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Mavs are signing Klay Thompson to a three-year deal worth $50 million that includes a player option. This move will be a multi-team sign and trade that also sends Josh Green to the Charlotte Hornets.
The Mavericks were battling the Los Angeles Lakers to land Thompson, and Dallas ended up on top as they now have one of the greatest shooters of all time on their squad. For his career, Thompson averages 19.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 0.9 steals per game while shooting 41.3 percent from downtown.
Thompson coming to the Mavs fixes one of their biggest weaknesses, which was 3-point shooting, and now the Mavs are set to continue to contend for years to come. The biggest question mark with Thompson's potential fit in Dallas is his defense at the point of attack, as he'll have to buckle down considering he'll be sharing the floor with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
Thompson playing next to Doncic and Irving is going to be must-watch TV every night, and his shooting will help Dallas tremendously. While losing Green does hurt, the Mavs have a viable replacement as they traded for Quentin Grimes last week.
Green is someone who the Hornets have been eyeing for a while now, and he'll get a fresh start in Charlotte while Thompson could ride off into the sunset with the Mavs. While the full details of the sign and trade are still being finalized, these are the originally reported details from Wojnarowski.
The Mavericks have landed their sharpshooter of the future in Thompson, and he forms an impressive big three with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
