Weakness Dallas Mavericks still have after free agency: 1. Second star
The Mavs are not going to win a championship playing the way they did in the 2021 playoffs. Everything on offense revolved around Luka Doncic as second star Kristaps Porzingis was relegated to being a spot-up shooter. The Unicorn averaged just 13.1 points per game in the postseason. Dallas had five players average over ten a night, but Tim Hardaway Jr. (17.0) joined Luka as the only players to produce more than KP.
It takes at least two All-Stars to win a championship. The two most recent duos are Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton in Milwaukee and LeBron James and Anthony Davis for the Lakers. Every champion since 2004 had multiple current All-Stars on their roster. Dallas cannot seriously contend with one superstar and 14 role players.
Kristaps Porzingis was an All-Star in 2018, and at 26 years old, there is still time for him to return to that level. The injuries are becoming worrisome, but the Unicorn had the first healthy offseason of his NBA career this year. New head coach Jason Kidd is invested in making KP great again, so can he help him be the second star Dallas needs? Porzingis has the talent, but putting it all together is no guarantee.
The Dallas Mavericks will continue looking for ways to acquire another star player. Pulling it off is the key to jumping into title contention. Stay tuned to see if they can make it happen.
