Only 1 Maverick can save Nico Harrison from his horrendous Quentin Grimes trade

The Dallas Mavericks can't seem to catch a break this season, as the basketball gods continue to haunt them medically, as P.J. Washington went down with an ankle injury and did not return against the Milwaukee Bucks over the weekend.

This was a blow to the big man position, as Moses Brown played his last game with Dallas against Milwaukee. Brown started to dominate in the paint, which was a welcomed sight Mavs fans have been wanting to see for a while now, but the recent signing of Kai Jones proves to bring more size and rim protection that's much needed in Dallas.

We've heard a lot about the Luka Doncic trade that shocked the world just over a month ago, but the Quentin Grimes trade for Caleb Martin has made a lot of noise recently, with Mavs fans once again raising the simple question of why the organization decided to look in a different direction with a young and up-and-coming player. Nico Harrison has been under fire for that move over the last few weeks, as Martin hasn't played yet and Grimes is playing great basketball.

Harrison's risky move forces Spencer Dinwiddie to fill the shoes of Grimes' role, which is going to be an extremely important one for the rest of the season.

Spencer Dinwiddie must clean up the Mavericks' Quentin Grimes mess

Grimes' shot creation was on display for the Philadelphia 76ers against the Golden State Warriors. His shot creating and shooting was on fire, putting up a career-high with 44 points with not even playing a full month in a 76er uniform yet. It reminded the Mavs of why they had to trade away Grimes.

Other than reports of Grimes' agent wanting him to be traded away after the Doncic trade, Dallas should've held on to him because of his shot creating skills, which gave Dallas more guard depth to work around. It also must be considered that Grimes was going to be a restricted free agent this summer, meaning Dallas could have had a good shot at re-signing him. Now with Doncic and Grimes gone, this leaves a hole that Dinwiddie has to take over.

Dinwiddie has had plenty of boom or bust games this season, but whenever he's boomed, he's come through to help the Mavs win ball games. The only difference is that he hasn't had the pressure to be a scorer and a primary ball handler all times, he's just had to be a reliable scorer when the other guards have been healthy. Now, he'll have to do both.

In Dinwiddie's last 10 games, he's averaging 10.5 points per game and over three assists. The trade has also helped him to get more consistent minutes, compared to the beginning of the season where his minutes were up in the air.

Dinwiddie's veteran status proves that he's up to the task of making more of his minutes in the post-Doncic and post-Grimes era, but whether or not his shot creating ability can be replicated will depend on how Dinwiddie treats his reps.

Harrison is still under major fire for the moves he made at the trade deadline, and Dinwiddie displaying some consistency and reliability could help fans forget about Harrison trading Grimes.
