Nico Harrison is flirting with a disastrous mistake that will doom the Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks' season has gone far from what people expected before the season began, and this can be attributed to a handful of factors.

From injuries all season long to trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis out of nowhere, this team has gone through the weirdest season in franchise history. The Doncic trade has truly destroyed their long-term future, as Nico Harrison's decision to trade him has significantly shortened their title window, and now all of the weight is on Davis and Kyrie Irving's shoulders to go win a title as soon as possible.

With Irving likely being out for a significant chunk of next year, Dallas is going to have their backs against the wall once again. Being without Irving will undoubtedly make it much harder for Davis to steer the ship and put the Mavericks in a prime spot to go on a playoff run, but a rumored trade that is on the table could make Dallas' situation go from bad to worse.

A trade for Kevin Durant would cripple the Mavericks' future

The Mavericks were in trade rumors for Kevin Durant at the trade deadline this season, and all signs are pointing to these rumors reappearing this summer. The Athletic's Sam Amick was recently on "The Ringer NBA Show," and he dove into the Mavs' situation and linked them to Durant once again.

"Nico, with his Nike background, there's a lot of chatter around the league that he keeps wanting to keep going down this road of known commodities from his past and pursue Kevin Durant along with a lot of other teams this summer," Amick said.

Even though Dallas' interest in Durant at the trade deadline wasn't as intense as it seemed, it seems inevitable that Harrison is going to take a swing at him this summer, and the team's future would become more cooked than it already is. The Mavericks would have to give up significant draft capital and multiple good role players to get the Phoenix Suns to trade him, and they would not be contenders moving forward.

The Mavericks' depth was a huge reason that they were able to reach the NBA Finals last season, and trading most of it for a 36-year-old Durant would be a major risk. The three-star system in Phoenix has been a disaster due to everything that comes along with it, and Harrison making a move to bring in Durant would limit them in ways that fans don't realize.

Dallas would likely be forced to roll with the roster they have after the trade, along with some veteran minimum signings, and that is a recipe for disaster. On paper, the big three of Durant, Davis, and Irving should dominate the NBA, but fans must consider all of the consequences that come along with trading for Durant, including gutting Dallas' depth and holding them back financially.

Harrison would be putting even more pressure on the current core to go win a title while completely disregarding the future, and while the excitement around the team from fans would be high, it would not be worth it. Dallas is in an unbelievably tough position since they traded the franchise cornerstone while not maximizing the return, and time will tell how they decide to fill out their roster this summer.
